Interesting...I got a email from Aldiko after a nice email to them about the missing mass import of directories directly from SD in version 2.0. He said that the next update will have the return of that function. If you don't ask the question you won't get a answer.

Nope. I brought them over as is. Some work, some don't, which leads me to think not all are DRMed. Hypothetically speaking, would calibre work for removing that?

PS: Nope. It doesn't.

Can you tell me how you got the shortcuts to the books created on your desktop? I'm using ADW and when I bring up the menu (by holding down on desktop) the options for shortcuts, custom shortcuts, widgets, etc comes up but don't seem to work properly. The shortcut option doesn't do anything, just goes back to desktop. The custom shortcut brings up a dialog box asking to pick activity, but when you press it, it just goes back to desktop.

Is there something else I should be doing instead? (Using 1.2.1 of ADW)

Here's the thread about placing shortcuts (in general) on the desktop:

Then come back here and read posts 14 and 15 when you're ready to do it.

Since Aldiko version 2 is a paid app I know some want to know more about what it looks like.

Here are some more pics.

Nice job.

I so miss the days of the 24-hour trial on the Android market. I bought so many programs I otherwise might not have because I knew I could fully test them out without risk. Now we only have 15 minutes, which often is barely enough time to install and configure them. I can understand many developers thinking 24 hours is too long (especially for specialty apps you might only want to use once for a special incident, say LogMeIn), but 15 minutes is way too short. I used to trumpet how much better the Android market was than the iTunes market because of the 24 hour trial. So much for that.

Im liking Aldiko Pro
Ive imported all my ebooks into the app but how do I get the books on my shelves?
I can only browse them in List view.. not Shelf view
The Aldiko Forum/FAQ is of no help

Answering my own question
I was in shelf view and had "Recent Reads" selected
I just changed it to "Books by Title" and everything shows up.
Thanks anyway

I purchased the pro version after reading the posts by @SCION and I must say .. it's very good, I now use it over the Nookcolor standard software.

Also Aldiko works very well with my set-up using calibre and calibre2opds, I can now assess my catalogue of books that I have stored on dropbox from anywhere.

Thankyou SCION

another reader...

Hey folks - I'm fairly tech-illiterate, though I did manage to follow the rooting directions (yay!)

Right now I'm reading BN books in their reader and my Amazon books in the Kindle app... and what I'd really like is just a nice simple central location to access all my books.

Would aldiko (or something else) be able to pull that off for me?

Thanks!

Hi, the answer is no. Amazon (should be Kindle) requires books be in their designated Amazon (should be Kindle) folder and Aldiko requires books be in their designated Aldiko (ebooks) folder. The stock reader requires books be in certain folders as well.

One reason why people remove the DRM from their books is so that they can use the stock reader or one app for all of their books.

Moon+ Reader

I spent some time with Moon+ Reader over the weekend. Though not as visually pleasing as Aldiko Premium and in need of fine tuning, it's not bad at all. Font selection is horrible, so I imported my own fonts using the SD card (/sdcard/fonts). There's much tweaking to be done to get your lay out on screen so that it satisfies you. Some of this involves manipulating the font scale to get rid of excess space between letters and words.

What sets the app apart from Aldiko are textured/fabric backgrounds (love this!), page turns that resemble a physical book (set mine to lowest speed), and the ability to highlight and make notes. You can also export bookmarks, highlights and notes. Oh, one thing that I really wish Aldiko had is the ability to make the text bold/darker (wouldn't be a big deal if I could import fonts). Moon+ Reader has this option and it looks great on textured backgrounds.

Edit: Forgot to mention that books must be DRM-free.

Thanks SCION. I've been trying to figure out if I want to try Moon+, but it looks like the only thing I'd really prefer is the textured backgrounds. The rest is so optional I think I'll just stick to Akdiko.
