It would just be nice if there was more balance in their book ordering - 100 books of a single genre at once seems strange. |

My library system made a big deal out of ordering loads of new ebooks around the holidays. Some of them are good, and it's a nice change from how the catalog used to be - before this it was mostly self-help books.
I do have to question their wisdom a bit, though, as a lot of the books they've bought are later books in a series - so, they'll have, say, number 11 available as an ebook, but not numbers 1-10. In some cases they don't even have the other books in the series as pbooks! Sigh. I should probably stop being so picky. :P |

who cares about local libs? This is the internet, a global network. I'm much more concerned over Gutenberg's collection than some local bunch of a few of the same offerings...

My library used to have say Book 1 & 3 of a series but not Book 2! They have really improved lately. I suggest that you file a feedback form with your library. Mine sent out a survey and one of my suggestions was to improve their series offerings. My library adds several hundred books every month. They have good variety. However it is clear that sometimes they have done a mass acquisition of catalogs from certain authors that month. It seems that mysteries and thrillers gets much focus at my library, which is fine for me.

Well, I am a Harvard-educated lawyer, and I find romances to be just the thing after thumbing through the Internal Revenue Code all day. Just think of it as Weather Channel, for women.

And they are very pleasent to deal with. I've requested about 20 ebooks (I've been a member for ~9 months), and they always try to get what I request. Thank you FLP. |

Paperback romance of the disposable Harlequin-type alone took up 4 entire 4-column spinner-racks at the physical library branch I visited over the weekend (it also had an entire row-length bookcase, filled on both sides, of hardcover/TPBs in the "permanent" section).
By contrast, Mystery/Suspense/Thriller/Horror was in 2nd place with 3 spinner-racks and SF/Fantasy combined with (sigh) 1 1/2. And part of one of the SF/F/H spinner columns was filled with what looked to be paranormal romance. The province-wide e-library, on the other hand, tends to mainly get in literary and bestseller-type general fiction, DIY cooking/crafts/personal finance for dummies and political/pop-history non-fiction, with occasional surges of romance and mystery. Clearly somebody's reading them, and I don't mind as long as it helps subsidize the acquisition of my own preferred (and obviously less popular) genres. |

![]() True they mostly appear to be from Harlequin. If they're under a budget crunch, that might explain it because Harlequin e-books are about a third of the price of bestseller (I can get them for $3.30, not $9.99, thank goodness) Last edited by Joykins; 02-08-2011 at 10:31 AM. |

Yeah. My local library system just got in the game and since I'm a PA resident with this Access PA designation on my library card, it apparently gives me a free FLP membership too which I just sent in. Cool! I also can deal with waits. My local system doesn't have a huge selection, but it's more than I thought too, and I did take out one book just to try. I have an iPad so I use Overdrive which isn't optimized for the iPad but does work. It also does not offer PDF books for loan, only ePub, but hey, I'll take what I can!!!

It [The Weather Channel] is the most watched cable channel in America. I'll repeat that. It is the most watched cable channel in America. They were worried about the terrorists immobilizing us, and a portion of our countrymen watch weather. 'Kay, you don't get any more immobile than that... unless you're in a goddamn coma. That means you're saying, "I'd go to the window, but it's too far." If you want to know what the weather is you go to a window and stick your hand out and if you want to know what the temperature is you drive by a bank. |
