If so, they could still be 'fine' if your definition of fine is just getting through an album or two (for some folks it might be just getting through a song or two!).

Personally, I am a fan of Audio Books, which can run 15 to 20 hours or more, so I suspect that my definition of 'fine' might therefore be a little different than yours, and I like the fact that, for less than five bucks I can buy a battery that will restore my Galaxy Player 4 to 'like new' run times, and that I can install that battery in 30 seconds (without any 'special tools' or YouTube videos).
*shrugs* I bought my iPod back when 60GBs was the largest hard drive size and touchscreens where nowhere to be seen. I'd guess that was around 2003 or 2004. The battery lasted for 20 hours when I bought it and ~16 hours now. Personally, I don't listen to audio books for 15 to 20 hours straight (to each his own), but I do use my iPod for white noise on overnight flights and I always have battery left at the end of my journey. I can live with that.

Umm..yeah...hence all the folks who lists Kindle 1, 2 and other discontinued models among their devices, and all the talk from those of us who have replaced our batteries. In fact, as a group, we seem to collect and keep these things more than most.

Decades old computers I may trash. We just got rid of a bunch of Commodore stuff. But not handhelds.

And yet, knowing I almost never re-read, I delete a book as soon as I am done it. I guess we all differ in what we collect.

The last paper book technical change I can think of was the shift from sewn to perfect (glued) binding. No improvement at all - the change made the books less sturdy. So change does not have to be an improvement. We are already seeing what are, for me, non-improvement improvements to eReaders, such as color and touch screen.

I have, and I do. I have several Jinke (BebOOK/ASTAK) original 6" models with a user replaceable battery (Nokia cellphone design). I have replaced one battery so far. I expect to use them until I'm dead.

Sounds silly? I have a solar powered (cheap) simple calculator that I bought in the early 1980's. It didn't have an internal battery (remember, I said cheap) so it takes a few seconds for the solar panel to charge it up when taken out of the drawer. Still working fine after nearly 30 years...

If something does the job well, why change it every couple years?

Yeah I know. I was joking a little. Should have used the word "most". But still I see that a good majority of people here have multiple e-ink devices or they upgrade and replace every year or two. So there really isnt a chance for the battery to die and be replaced. Yeah some people keep a device long enough where the battery goes kaput or one that is defective and may want to replace. But it seems, to me anyways, that many people here like to upgrade with the next model up.

I have heard it said that the "owner of a kindle is much more likely to die before the kindle's battery does."

Hmmm. A lithium battery, such as the Kindle uses, has a typical lifetime of perhaps 5-7 years. The clock starts ticking when the battery is first charged, and cannot be stopped.

Can you explain why you believe that a typical Kindle owner is likely to die in 5-7 years?

Not true. I won't die until I have knit all my yarn and read all my books.
