I might have missed it, but did anyone mention that you can create a folder on your Mac called Kindle and move the files on your Kindle to it? This way you could still keep your books, have them for a backup of the original Kindle for as long as that lasts. Same with any other ereader. If you upgrade your Kindle they wouldn't work, but hopefully Amazon would last long enough after you upgraded that you would have time to add your books to the new Kindle.
I also have enough faith in Amazon that even if they do go under they are customercentric (their word) enough to prevent the complete loss that you are talking about. And I also believe that by the time Amazon goes under I will have moved on to a newer and better ereader, holographic maybe? |

Yay mass confusion and only one person that actually spoke with amazon themselves (ME)... so rather than believe the spread lies based on perceptions or stubbornness, please call amazon yourself and ignore the people that can never be wrong, even on opinions, or their own perception of facts based on false or outdated information (notice they all have kindle 2s, not 3s?).
edit: let me modify my previous wording: It worked for me on several books that I tested it with... but as others have stated, it may or may not work for all books. Last edited by screwballl; 01-05-2011 at 05:15 PM. |

This is what happens when you try to upload a K4PC Amazon purchased ebook onto your Kindle 3 which is a separate device.
The book is displayed on your Kindle but you cannot open it and you get the error message shown in the attachment. Hope we can now lay this one to rest ![]() |

Correct, read the message: DIFFERENT USER, not "different device". I have seen that too when I got one from an old amazon account and attempted to transfer it. Once the EXACT same title was bought under my current account, it transferred over without a problem.

I just downloaded a book to my K4PC that I don't have on my K3 as a test. I moved it from the MyKindle folder to my K3. When I try to open it up I get the message:
This item cannot be opened because it is licensed to a different user. Delete the item and download it from your Archived Items or purchase a copy from the Kindle store. I guess the file (not the book) is DRMd to the device. |

The "user" is the device, not the account holder. I type to slow and TheKindleWorm
beat me to it. |

Then you guys must be getting different files/books or it is hit and miss... none of my DRM files have ever had the problem you guys show unless it was bought under a completely different amazon account that is not the same as what my Kindle or K4PC uses...
So we can agree that it works on some but not others... well at least I realize that regardless of what you guys see with your one or two tests. edit: let me modify my previous wording: It worked for me on several books that I tested it with... but as others have stated, it may or may not work for all books. That is how it most definitely works for me, I've tested it and displayed the results. I have the latest 3G K3 Kindle and it's on the 3.0.3 firmware. I would find it strange if other Kindles behaved differently but if you can transfer Amazon DRMd books from any kindle app to another that's a bonus for you then I guess! What it boils down to is that people should test it for themselves. |

Are all Amazon.com purchased AZW files DRM'd? I managed to convert one I bought to MOBI so I'm wondering if I've truly figured out DRM stripping or was this book somehow unprotected to begin with? I converted it to fix the formatting cause there were no chapter breaks, sloppy.

The complicating factor is that some AZW ebooks from the Kindle store are DRM-free. These ebook files will work on all Kindle devices and apps. On the ebook's Kindle store page there will be "Simultaneous Device Usage: Unlimited".

It's called Hollowland. It was 99 cents but had poor formatting so I converted it and fixed it up in Sigil. The device usage was unlimited on it I remember, guess it was DRM free as the poster above describes.
Okay, now that I know some pay-for books are not DRM'd I tried converting a DRM'd book with Calibre and it seemed to successfully decode it automatically as I added it to the library. Nice. The non-DRM file remained an AZW in Calibre and the DRM file appeared only as a Mobi when added. I know the original poster was concerned about using this method but I think it would solve all of his problems. If you crack the DRM and don't give it to anyone else I don't think it's morally wrong, legally wrong is a whole different story tho. Last edited by Snakey; 01-05-2011 at 10:26 PM. |
