The first and foremost reason I use the password protection is because I have a 3 and 8 year old that lay their hands all over everything... and I can just imagine them clearing off my Kindle and emptying my amazon backups.

I hacked the screensaver on my K3 and put my name/email on it. I'm also thinking about getting one of those engraved brass plates to put on the cover. Tip - for anyone who does their own engraving, you can usually find those plates cheaper at electrical supply houses, in a few different finishes.

Would you really want some complete stranger to be snooping around through your phones / wallets / purses and learning your names, addresses, phone numbers, family members ... not to mention whatever other "personal" information might be laying around; bank info, social security number, children's photos? I agree time might be of the essence, but the rule was created to protect passengers. As soon as an item is found it is immediately turned over to a manager. The manager will then be the ONLY person peeking at your personal information, looking for a name, which will then be communicated to the people working at the ticket counter. They will page the named passenger. There has to be a solid, non-compromised chain of possession from finder - owner. |

Exer, if the finder isn't honest (s)he 'll be snooping around anyway. if IS, (s)he shall have the posibility to follow the honest intentions w/o fears of going into trouble with the bosses

I love my Kindle so much that I can't imagine ever sitting it down somewhere and forgetting about. It has topped my Wii as my favorite toy of all time.
Now that I said this, I will probably lose it somewhere. ![]() I love the idea of the personal information stored on a screensaver. I haven't hacked my Kindle yet, but had planned to soon to use the music shuffler. This gives me another reason to do it. |

another tip for you frequent travelers... SHARPIE makes both gold and silver metallic markers. I think one or the other would be perfect for writing your name and contact info on a cover. we use them at ski school for marking our handheld radios which end up suffering all sorts of abuse, in and out of pockets, being dropped, constantly wet, etc. in over 10 years at that school and using those radios, I've never seen a marking wear off. my return address labels on my Kindle are wearing quickly. I think I will pick up a silver sharpie tomorrow! ;o)
and thanks to Exer for initially giving us the info about lost and found on airplanes! |

Sydney's Mom, thanks for bringing up this subject. Although I have entered contact details in "Personal Info" on the third screen of the Settings section on my Kindle, there have been a lot of other good ideas here that I'm going to consider in addition to that!
I hope some kind person returns your husband's lost Kindle. I was just reading at kindleboards forum that someone there was trying to find the owner of a Kindle that her sister found at an airport. (She didn't mention which airport.) They're sending the Kindle to Amazon since there's no owner identification on the device. So, there are good people out there! Amazon said they will find the owner and return it to them. ![]() |

I went with contact-info labels on the back of my gadgets because they'd be visible even if my devices ran out of juice.
I have see-through cases on my Kindle and iPad, so the devices and my contact info are protected. |

Yes. And I had entered information and the offer of a reward in the personal information section, but that was useless with a password. I guess I will have to do without, and make sure I don't hand it over to someone to play with.

Do remember. all the internal document methods, assume:
1) the finder knows how to operate your device. 2) The device has power to run long enough for the finder to figure it out.. Printed Labels ![]() |

Although, since I put all my books in Calibre, and I use the current kindle without a cover (just a cover to transport it), losing my Kindle would not be the catastrophe it was when I lost my first Kindle. I paid $389 for that kindle, plus another $100 for an Oberon cover, and I didn't have my books backed up anywhere. Now, I have Calibre backed up on 3 computers, and to Drop Box. (Guess even an old dog can learn new tricks.) |

For my Kindle 2, I put Reward and my phone number for the device name.
I like the idea of the hacked screen savers. I will have to try that one :-) |
