The continued flex of the cover back could result in premature wear, cracking (leather) of the cover and is yet another reason that I choose to remove the K3 when using it. The cover is quite adequate for protection, but never seemed to me to be suitable or even intended for use while reading. Like any book backing, the number of times it can be flexed is finite.
![]() If you have children who could knock the Kindle on the floor, or if you use it on a train or subway or bus, then using the cover is probably a good idea to protect edges and the screen. |

I use that cover (unlighted) for protection.
Shortly after getting it, I realised I prefer my Kindle to be naked while I am reading (my Kindle has yet to remark on how it prefers me), so I'm often putting the case on and taking it off. The design means there's very little strain on the Kindle itself as the cover is removed and put on. To take it off, the upper spring-loaded hook is pushed down, then the Kindle is turned on its axis by 60 degrees, sliding out of the cover. It's not like it clips on, or anything. |

Yes, I was a bit confused about those comments about cracking the Kindle with repeated removals. I would be much more concerned that the back would crack with repeated use as a cover. But, to each his own. The cover is too expensive for me to consider using it as a holder while reading, and leather will crack with repeated binding when it is a treated surface and unavailable for oil treatment.

I never understood the kindle-cracking issues either. I don't think it was from removal from the cover, but was due to people attempting to open the cover from the wrong side and prying the Kindle up, snaaaap. Mostly I think this was done by young children or possibly chimpanzees.
The leather seems pretty hardy, so I don't think it would start to fall apart, or most likely it would outlast the Kindle itself. But I understand the concern. There are flip-style covers designed specifically for that purpose, too. I know a lot of people enjoy using the kindle cover-free, though. Using the cover solely as storage will likely make it last 50-200 years, so that is one benefit. |
