I just looked at my non lighted cover and both hooks are metal. It was ordered about November 10. Had problems with lockups first week. Pulled cover off and it has worked good since with no lockups.

Darn, looks like I should have bought the unlit cover. :-)

Further to screwball's skeptical comments: my K3 in an unlit Amazon cover was working perfectly well until about a week ago, when it started showing the same sort of symptoms described by others here. Before contacting Amazon, I came on line and read about the potential unlit cover issue. I took the cover off, and my K3 started working perfectly, with no crashes for 2 days. I have since tried putting the cover back on twice, and every time it has started to freeze up within 30 minutes. These later times, I have been using the Kindle in my office at a desk - not exactly jogging around!! I feel that pretty definitively identifies what is causing the problem, and belies what to me appears to be somewhat uninformed comment by screwball.

As for the plastic/metal hinge question - there is no doubt that the hinges on my Kindle are metal.

It's several miles past concluded at this point, and being taken care of by Amazon for the most part. I don't want the lighted case, really. If they release a new unlighted cover sans problems, I may use the credit they gave me to try it again. I kinda miss it..sniffle.

As for the metal/plastic hinge thing, I also thought they were plastic for a while. The coating mimics non-metal very well, at least to my senses. Maybe they'll start making them out of polypropylene or something.

Mine was a leather(ette?) cover just purchased in November and it caused the reboot problem. Called Amazon and they quickly credited my account for the cost of a lighted cover. Best customer service ever!

Metal tab in electrical socket

Hi,
The way it was explained to me the unlighted cover has metal tabs to secure the kindle to the cover. The top socket in the kindle has contacts to power the light in the lighted cover. The paint on the tabs of the unlighted cover are supposed to insulate it from the contacts. Hmm paint is not a good insulator, especially when the painted surface is moved around constantly. Got rid of the unlighted cover and got a $60 credit for a lighted cover. Yay!

I purchased my kindle and kindle non-lighted case at Best Buy. Went online to trouble shoot the re-boot problem. Went to Amazon support, entered my phone number and clicked the call me button. The phone rang two seconds later and I got a $60 credit for a new lighted cover. Very cool!

Edit: I guess I can't reply immediately below the post I want to reply to. oops

The Amazon Kindle team says:
(AMAZON OFFICIAL)
There have been some forum discussions regarding the non-lighted Kindle cover, and our engineering team is looking into this. Regardless, if anyone is having any problem with an Amazon-manufactured Kindle cover, please call us at 877-453-4512 or 206-922-0844 . We will be pleased to replace it for free with a different cover or accept a return for a full refund, no matter when the cover was purchased. "
Just wanted to say thanks to @FF2 for this information. I was able to get my cover replaced (and my Fathers) with a quick phone call yesterday.

FYI, Amazon is no longer taking the old covers back. They credited the original purchase price and added a $25 credit towards the purchase of a lighted cover to my account for each cover.
