Exactly. There's a big difference between $249 for the NC and $500+ for iPad and Galaxy Tab. And before someone jumps in with "but the iPad/Galaxy are full-fledged tablets", there are those of us who can see the NC as not just a reader, but a "Document Storage Device" that just needs a few tweaks. In my case that would be the ability to edit documents, highlight and bookmark sections in PDFs, and create notes for later review.

Or, it can be seen as a neutered tablet.

Now that 7" screens are established as a viable size, it's just a matter of time before cheap tablets flood the market.

Mind you, I don't think the Nook Color is necessarily a bad device. It's also not a bad business move, if they are at least breaking even on the hardware (or close to it). I just don't think massive waves of hackers will turn it into a successful platform -- especially if said hackers don't end up buying B&N ebooks.

The effects of hackers interest are not easy to estimate. What tends to be the case is that their work is used by folks who aren't hackers themselves, but are crafty enough to download and use the firmware.

The overall effect boosts(how much?) the functionality of the basic device, which increases probability of the same device being bought and used by folks who do buy B&N books.

gotta say after just seeing the NC ad on Hulu this looks like a potentially idea concept device. It's not the large format full color reader many people want and need but it sure is pretty nice. Color me surprised. We'll see where it goes. Certainly this potentially gives them an advantage over Amazon in several areas of reading material.
