Someone whose blog I read said they were going to give them out at a Tube station. I might be tempted to do that on a weekday but on a Saturday night people will probably be going out for the evening and won't want to carry a book. I'd hate to see them thrown away in a bin like flyers or free newspapers.

If it was a weekday morning it would be really cool to give them out on the Tube and ask people to pass them on when they'd finished with them, the way they do with those crappy free newspapers that are full of spiteful gossip about celebrities, and don't seem to have any news in them at all.

I like the idea of a party, maybe a party in a library? I definitely like the idea of doing something locally, perhaps even inviting friends - but following instructions and giving the books to people who wouldn't otherwise buy or read them.

I've got a friend who is an actress, and she's Scottish. I'm half wondering about doing an 'event' and asking her to read an extract from The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. My poor friend, though. Actors always get asked to do things like this for nothing.

So... it's three weeks away and what I'm saying is that I haven't got any firm plans at all for myself, never mind suggestions for you, Mike. But it's exciting, isn't it? I'm glad to be a part of it.

What a great idea - I gather it is only for the UK ...?

I have read two of the books on the list, Killing Floor by Lee Child and Northern Lights by Philip Pullman, both of which I enjoyed.

I would probably give away either the Lee Child or the Marian Keyes, as both are more accessible books for those who don't read often (and the idea, presumably, is to encourage more people to read).

Karen, I hope it will spread to the rest of the world. By the way, I was really sorry to read about the earthquakes in NZ - it's really dreadful news. I hope you and your family are not directly affected, though I'm sure you must be affected in some way, even indirectly. It's very grim to watch from here and must be so much worse if you're over there.

I have settled on how I'm going to give away my books on 5th March.

There's also a big event planned in Trafalgar Square in London on 4th March with Margaret Atwood and many other authors planning to be there.

Is anyone else planning on going along to that? I realise that living in London would certainly help. KiwiMick, how are your plans coming along? I know you're in London.

I'm getting really excited about this now...

Hi Helen

yes im in London but have been so busy at the moment I havent really had a chance to think about it too much. I have arranged to give away about a dozen books so far but have yet to research places that might be interested or if i could give them away at a mall somewhere. Im going to devote some time to that this weekend.
I will also have a look into the event at Trafalgar Square

Oh by the way Helen you might remember that you sent me your book Alison Wonderland for my daughter. Just to let you know that she really enjoyed it and has passed it on to me to read. So if you ever see a bloke reading your book on the District line chances are it will be me

Ooh thank you! I'm really glad your daughter enjoyed it - I hope you will too. Remember to read it with the cover held up so everyone can see the title...

How did your giveaways go, Mike?

I was on stage for the launch event in Trafalgar Square in London on 4th March and I did a write-up about that and, about giving away the 48 books I had been allocated - to an exiled writers group I mentor, to people in Brixton and to several imprisoned writers around the world. You can read about it on my blog.
