Folders are a way to organize your icons. When you're moving your apps drag and drop one top of another and a folder is created. On the iPad you can have up to 20 in a folder.

To supplement what tyche says above, the following is a link to both a video and text constituting an iPad iOS 4.2 "walkthrough". It might be of some assistance:

Love the update. 10 screens down to 2 thanks to folders. Love playing pandora in the background, and the new dimmer ability.

Agreed. I don't like extra processes whether or not they are consuming resources. However, I will gladly suffer the current implementation. Multitasking!!!

I had a problem with wifi in my iPad. I'd get odd pauses on most every click while browsing at (frequent) times, and often those times it would just time out. And yet, the wifi signal showed full or just less than (which is actually more than usual). Sometimes if I stopped the attempt to load the page, waited a few seconds, and then tried again, it would start straight away. Frustrating. My iPhone 3GS? No problems.

However, I tried disconnecting and reconnecting to my wifi network, no luck; rebooting iPad, no luck; rebooting our router, no luck; then resetting all network settings on the iPad (and then entering the wrong router passcode for a few attempts )... I believe, SUCCESS! Or, at least, when it pauses at the same point, it does so for about a second, and then moves on as normal without further delay. Annoying, but resolution soothes the savage temptation to test the iPad's aerodynamics.

Other than that, very happy with the upgrade (though, as mentioned, I've the iPhone 3GS as well, so I knew what was coming).

Cheers,
Marc

Cheers for multitasking.

I've not run into any 4.2 problems so far, on iPad, iPhone or Touch. I'm on 3G, though, so haven't bothered with wi-fi yet.

Montsnmags, thanks for the link to the 4.2 walkthrough.

I like "multitasking" in that it returns me to the same place in a state-preserved app after I switch. Before, if I was using two apps, I often had to start back from scratch after switching. It's also nice to keep audio apps running in the background while doing other things.

I don't like multitasking because you have to go to the task manager all the time if you want to get rid of the preserved state for apps you don't plan to return to. There is at least one app that seems to be unhappy (ie it crashes) if other apps are in suspended animation with the new multitasking.

I also find that apps are crashing more with the new iOS version, but I suspect that will ease up after more app updates come out.

And I suspect that my battery life is less. (A HUGE deal for me, because that's a big part of why I love my iPad. Eventually, a touch screen netbook or notebook in a size not much bigger than the iPad would probably be preferable to me if it had similar battery life. Just personal taste, and I may change my mind, but I would be happy to get out of the Apple/iTunes thing. I recommend it to others who want ease of use, but I like the full computer capabilities you get with a Windows or Ubuntu O/S.)

Also good with the update is search within a Safari web page. And folders... they are nice to help manage the home page apps. I'm sure there were other good features added, but I can't remember any of them.

Now if we could only get a few things like...
* Bluetooth mouse support
* Direct access to app data folders via USB (without iTunes)
* USB support for keyboard, mouse, storage, etc through a cable adapter (I think people got USB Keyboards working if I remember right, but it was probably a workaround, and not something directly supported.)
* Less dependence on iTunes (never gonna happen)

Notice I didn't list things like cameras or other hardware features that keep popping up in rumors for a new iPad... they would just make me jealous because for me it probably wouldn't be worth upgrading.

But for ebook/pdf reading it's fantastic if you are okay with LCD screens. Games are fun on the side. And the form factor/battery life is out of this world. I'm very happy with my iPad so far, and the update seems to be a nice enhancement.

There is a third party program called "iPhone Explorer" that can do this. The iOS file structure isn't very "human friendly" though.

I've done the keyboard thing myself. No workaround necessary. Just plug it into the camera connection kit USB adapter. An error will immediately pop up saying that the device you have attached isn't supported, but just hit "dismiss" and you're free to start typing away.

That said, as I understand some keyboards draw more power than the adapter (or perhaps the aging Dock port itself) can handle and will either not work at all or will cause that error message to constantly reappear. This apparently includes Apple's own wired keyboard... which I guess is why it's not an officaly listed feature. Though running a powered Hub in-between the iPad and keyboard should resolve this issue.
