You won't find the typical swashbuckling, parrot-on-the-shoulder drivel here. Blood is intelligent and is a great precursor if you want to read the not free Aubrey-Martin books at any point.

I read the book in a matter of days and was much the better for it. I am not sure if MR has them, but i am positive that Feedbooks has them.
At the very least MR has the original Captain Blood. I would have suggested it earlier, but the OP specifically said they were interested in books set from 1700 on. Since Captain Blood takes place in the closing days of James II's rule, it predates 1700.

The original at least was a great yarn, though one thing never made any sense. He became because of the unjust treatment he received at the hands of James II, so he takes his vengeance out on the Spanish... Oh well, still a fun book.

I can recommend December 6 by Martin Cruz Smith, the same author who wrote Gorky Park. December 6 has been overlooked but I think it's a great story that gets inside Imperial Japan on the eve of Pearl Harbor through the eyes of an American expat with one foot in both cultures. The story has shades of Casablanca:

Also, for 1930s and 40s I always recommend any of Alan Furst's espionage novels. Lots of great historical detail without overdoing it (usually).
