http://www.slideshare.net/PubTrack/p...crunch-bea2009

The data indicates the following:
1) 43% of book buyers are male; 57% are female. 35% of the books ae purchased by men and 65% are purchased by women.
2) Out of the female buyers, 39% are 30 - 54 yrs old, 19% 65+ yrs old, 15% 55-64 yrs old, 19% 13-29 yrs old
2) 1.6% of the all formats sold are e-books.
3) For female age group 30-44, e-book purchase is 1.7%.

The data shows there are more female book buyers. Also, % ebooks purchased by women is on par with the overall % ebooks sold. At least in the US, I can't find data substantiating the rich wealthy male are supporting the ebook market. In fact, it seems to be the opposite.
Exactly.

OK peoples, for those unable to understand that not everyone on this planet is American....

The article is discussing FRENCH ebook readers/customers, and in France ebooks sales are almost nonexistent. The US market is more general and developed now, so US ebook reader demographics are completely and totally irrelevant.

And is anyone surprised that the people who are into the bleeding edge of technology would turn out to be wealthy men?

I'm not sure that it's only discussing French e-book customers...although it's hard to tell exactly who she is talking about. She's French, but she works for an international publisher (Hachette) is speaking in Barcelona and is being quoted in a British paper. And she also mentions US e-book reader numbers 9%, European numbers 1%, and French numbers (0%, basically).

Well, perhaps not French e-book customers, but European customers? I guess for sure. And, in that case, ebook market, excluding UK, is small and not developed. You can't compare American and European trends or market shares.

That would make sense - her statement itself was really unclear though. Although maybe we're lacking context; if the conference in Barcelona dealt with the European market, for example, it would make sense that she was referring to that market, for example.

I fit the demographic. I am 35, French, and an investment banker. I am very wealthy and have a supermodel wife and a supermodel mistress, and an ereader full of books that I never have any time to read because I'm too busy piloting my private jet all over the globe, though for short trips I use my rocket pack.

Uh-oh, here comes the nurse. I must make sure to take all my meds or they'll use that electrical device on me again, the one with all the dials, and they'll put the rubber plug in my mouth when they turn it on.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the article appeared in the Financial Times of London which, um, caters to wealthy young investment bankers. If they polledtheir readers and asked who of them had an eReader ... well ... I'm just saying ...

Are you calling wealthy white French men effeminate?

The articles seems more puff than substance and appears to be mixing up different markets:

I would imagine that in a market where ereader penetration is "zero," the early adopters are more likely to be be wealthier gadget aficionados. But throwing in numbers from more developed markets and making extrapolations without accounting for the corresponding change in demographics smacks of a dog and pony show.

It might come from the way they get their statistics. I'm not saying that it is not the young investment banker that pays for the ereader and the ebooks, but it might be the girlfriend/wife/mistress that reads them.

every person i've seen or talked to in the wild except for one who owns an ebook reader is either -
  • over 40 (mostly over 50 and some over 60)
  • under 18
  • female (i'd say 75% are female)

I'm a wealthy male. I buy a Kindle for every book I want to read. When I'm done with the book I throw the Kindle out.

I do however understand how poor people might want to keep more than one book on a Kindle.

I do the same thing for magazines with the iPad.

let's go men

It's about time men took the lead in sales of something. It seems to me that most all other sales numbers are set by teen-age girls.

This particular article may be International business orientated, but I remember Scott Turow making a similar comment a year or two ago - he didn't see much value in digital reading other than for the higher income business travel to take on the plane.

It seems to me to be yet another quote from a publishing industry employee that signals that they really don't understand the exploding digital reading market and they have a very difficult time in comprehending how to produce and market the product their customers are interested in buying.
