I put on my sunglasses when I have sunlight directly on the screen

They're nothing like a high quality hardbound book. The whiteness is more like that of a newspaper or lower quality paperback book. That said, the newer screen in the K3 is much better than the previous versions, but what you might be seeing is the different bezel color creates the illusion of a different background color. I think that they went to the darker bezel as it makes the screen background look more white in comparison to most people, but your eyes might be focusing more on the overall amount of gray rather than the difference between the two. (much like car mirrors that warn that objects are closer than they appear, because of the size distortion, but to me they are further than they appear because of the non linear distortion)

That said, I still love my K3... :-)

E-readers will not result in crystal clear whites; That's not how the screen works. The K3 is much "whiter" and "blacker" where it needs to be than its predeccesor, though, due to the Pearl-type screen.

You were expecting a bit too much, wanted a hardbound book's clear white pages. The kindle screen is much closer to a mass market paper back, though the three is probably brighter than a lot of newspaper. I've never made that comparison.

Next time, try demoing a unit in a local electronics store. Many have them on display.

If you look at my pictures, you'll notice that the Pearl screen's white reflectance is not substantially higher than that of the old Vizplex. The background is about the same, with pretty much all the difference being in the black range.

My experience comparing newspaper to EPD has been limited to domestic newspapers, but that experience shows newspaper stock to be of higher brightness than E-Ink. I've posted such photos before. I think Pearl has matched most newspaper in contrast, even if not really in whiteness.
