Combine Oberon and Sony covers?
Has anyone tried to combine the Sony cover with the Oberon cover for Kindle 2? I have the Oberon, it is beautiful and I love it. I also like the engineering of the Sony cover, with the hinges and the ability to swing the reader while in the case.
I am thinking, if one trims each side (right and left) of the Sony cover, one should be able to slip the Sony cover into the pouches built in the Oberon, then attach the reader to the Sony cover clip. In that way, the Oberon would hold in place the Sony cover which would secure the reader. Any thoughts? |

Thanks, Bookworm_Girl, for the pictures of your Oberon cover. It looks beautiful. Your photos and excellent review are what convinced me that this cover would work well for the PRS-950.
I ordered a K2 cover (Dragonfly Pond in Sky Blue) without the wool lining (thanks also for the heads up on the lining's cat hair-attracting qualities) and should have received it this week. UPS misdelivered it, and it is apparently lost ![]() Oberon's CS department was great when I called asking questions, and when I let them know that my shipment was lost. The employee to whom I spoke was consistently helpful and informative. (Thanks, Eileen!) I'll edit to add reactions to my cover when it arrives, but I'm certain I'll love it as much as Bookworm_Girl and jackinca do theirs. ETA: My Oberon cover has arrived, and I love it. As mentioned above, I ordered it without the wool lining, so the lining/interior of the left side (when open) is a solid piece of black leather, with a small pocket. (I wasn't sure how it would look without the wool.) Bookworm_Girl and jackinca have covered everything else, I think. Bookworm_Girl and jackinca, do you each leave your reader in the cover all the time? If you take it out, has that affected the tightness of the straps? If the straps do loosen, I imagine I can add small pads of felt or velcro as shims. Also, I hope I don't immediately yield to temptation and order a custom skin that better matches the cover! Hi, redbees. I'm sorry your shipment got lost. I still love my Oberon cover. I recently got a DecalGirl skin too in a floral pattern to match the cover. The Dragonfly Pond is a pretty design. I hope you enjoy it when it finally arrives!

I was worried about whether the straps would loosen over time too. However, after a few months of daily use, my 950 still fits tight in the cover. The only time I have removed it from the cover was to install the DecalGirl skin. Also Oberon supplies you with extras of the elastic bands in your shipping package so if the elastic stretches you can replace it. They also give you a small charm that matches your cover. Many people put the charm on the elastic band that goes around the button to close the cover.
I have an Oberon cover for my NOOKcolor too. With that delivery, I even received a complimentary tree of life magnet! I assume it was to say thanks for your business since it was my second order with them or perhaps it was because it took a few extra days to make the cover (they were out-of-stock of the button and had to get more). That's good customer service! |

off topic but.. been using my sony cover without light for my prs-950 for a few weeks now, the thing they got right is that it does not add to the size of the device.. still fits in my coat pocket.. but thats about it on the pro-s.. the "leather" is already off on a small part on the bottom right corner of the front cover and the device has come lose once from the cover, not a tragedy, I was in a hurry and basically threw it in my backbag, but no damage done..
So the conclusion: with a bit of superglue, a clothes hanger (plastic for the clip to attach the reader as on the original cover) and some nice covers off an agenda notebook or calender from my local store (it would have to be the right size, nothing else) and i would have a much better cover. Until then i will be wearing out my sony cover.. which a) has a sony logo b)doesn't add to the size of the device even better would be to order the right size covers from a local leather craftsman and construct a clip by myself.. if and when i ever do something as such ill be sure to post pics.. untill then I will enjoy reading from my Sony reader ![]() |

I, like many, had the plastic clip at the top of the Sony 950 cover snap off. I've had a 505 for years and have never had this happen. Needless to say, I was not impressed.
However, as mentioned by some I like how sleek the 950 cover is - even with the light it fits in the inside pocket of my jean jacket. My solution was a 3 inch piece of thin velcro tape on the back of the reader and the inside of the back cover. It's thin enough that it hasn't added any real thickness to the reader, but it sure keeps it from moving around and falling out. Not the best, but for those who've spent on the Sony cover and like the light, as I do, it salvages an otherwise useless cover. |

I had a surprise today and it is worth mentioning here, I thought, in case anyone else is looking for an Oberon cover for their 950.
I have a classic Nook WiFi in an Oberon cover for same and THAT cover actually fits my new 950 quite nicely! I have another cover on the way for the 950, and I still plan to use the Nook some, so I will leave the Oberon cover on the Nook for now, but I was really surprised as I had not expected it to fit at all, given the Sony is a little longer in dimension. The nice bit is that in the Nook Classic Oberon cover, the corner straps leave BOTH the power and WiFi buttons free and clear and fully accessible. It was a little tricky getting the Sony into the cover, but going bottom right, bottom left, upper left and then bungee cord worked fine, with the upper left strap being the most tricky to get on. It may be that six months of use with the Nook stretched the leather a tad. Or it might be that the fact that Nook is thicker creates the necessary give. There is still a bit of leather protruding on all sides to protect from bumps. I thought it was a very good fit actually, it looked like it had been made for the Sony 950. Maybe when the weather is better I'll take pix. At any rate, this makes yet another Oberon option for a Sony 950 besides the NC and K2 covers. With the new e-ink Nook coming out, there could well be more classic Nook covers coming up for sale used. |

Thank you so much for sharing another option, graycyn! That is a nice surprise. Good to know about the button placement. I find the upper-left corner to be the trickiest corner to install too. After about 6 months of daily use my cover still looks and fits like new. I am very happy with my purchase, and it was definitely worth the premium price.

You're welcome!
I had wondered if it might fit, but I thought that being longer, there would not be enough leather protruding around it to protect the edges from bumps. However, it's really quite close to the same protection level that Nook had, so I don't think this is a huge worry. |

I did talk to Oberon today on the phone, wondering what their advice on cover sizes would be. They continue to recommend the K2 cover size, but couldn't really tell me why it would be better than a Nook Color cover for the Sony 950.
I did mention that I'd fit the Sony into a regular Nook cover, and they told me that if it was a very snug fit, there was the possibility that the leather straps could tear over time. So anyone considering that option should be aware of that. I personally didn't think the fit was horrendously tight, I was able to take the reader in and out of the cover without any particular difficulty. I figure it is a workable solution if you are buying used at a nice discount, but the K2 cover might be a better choice if you are buying new. |

Hmm.. I know I'm resurrecting an old thread but I'm thinking of getting an Oberon. I likely never will because this is the most indecision I have ever, ever experienced. Trying to choose the right Oberon. I want Taupe, but it's discontinued. I love Navy, but I don't like Hokusai Wave. I'm thinking of Van Gogh Boats in Navy, but it's only available in the newer covers.. so, no K2. Yes to NC and Nook Classic.. I might try that. I wish Oberon would let you choose any color with any design.. I know it's a small business but I'm imagining Da Vinci or River Garden in Navy..
![]() I'm definitely leaning towards Van Gogh Boats in Navy, but can't decide bertween Nook Classic and Nook Color cover. I'm wondering if the extra depth of the Nook Color will cause the cover to be more bulky, or if the smaller dimensions of the Nook Classic would mean that the leather would either tear or the device would take too much strain...... (I've heard of Kindles cracking, although since the 950 is not plastic maybe it's not as big of a concern). Graycyn or anyone else who can weigh in.. please!! or pictures ![]() Last edited by seajewel; 12-10-2011 at 03:29 PM. |

Choosing a design and color is a really tough decision! People have reported that the NC cover works ok. I have an Oberon cover for my NC. I tried to fit my 950 into it, and it was really tight so I stopped. I didn't want to force it further and stretch the NC straps because I still use that cover with my NC. My opinion is that the 950 fits better in the K2 cover than the NC cover.
The external dimensions of the K2 and NC covers seem identical (if they are different it's imperceptible). It appears that the fit of the ereader is controlled by the placement of the straps internally. The K2 straps are more to the outside edges of the corners whereas the NC straps are inward more. The upper left-hand strap on the NC cover does overlap a tiny corner of my NC screen so I think it would do the same on the 950. Although I never noticed that until I just looked at it now! Maybe someone can posts photos if they are using a Nook Classic or Color cover with the 950. I thought there were some photos posted a few months ago, but I couldn't find the old threads. |
