I was surprised how easy it was. The main stumbling block was understanding if the plug-in was installed. I followed directions but got no status or update notification confirming proper installation. I tried several times.

Then I just tried importing a book to calibre and it worked!! I tried a test case where I imported the book, then converted to epub and loaded it to an ipad. Worked flawlessly.

Now that I can do this, I question the utility of it, other than comfort in the fact I have my books available for any reader I choose. I've already bought them and can already read them on mulitple devices, Kindle, ipad, iphone, so the utility seems limited at best. Just comfort mainly.

Hi All,

If you do visit that particular blog, don't forget to read the comments too and not just the main forum topics. There is often a time lag between new updates being announced in the comments and the main topic header being changed.

I use the Comments RSS link on the main site to find the most recent postings.

I have to admit I may be having trouble. I've got a zip file with tons of things in it that would get extracted to a whole but of Tools folder and subfolders under that. No idea where to start.

It helps to know what it is you want to do. One of the folder's names should relate to what type of ebook you're looking to work with... after that, there are readme's.

Also, the logical place to ask questions is the site that had the link to the archive.

In general terms only ...

That particular package is just an organized collection of the various tools that can be found across the web. Just like any zip, you can extract the entire archive from the zip and open up the folders and look around. You should quickly see a folder that makes sense to you given the type of book you want to work with or what you want (calibre plugins, stand-alone tools for specific book types, etc). Simply open the appropriate sub-folders and look for README or other helpful files.

If you want to use the calibre plugins, then install them following along with the instructions provided.

If you want to use the other tools, then on Windows make sure you have installed Python 2.X 32bit version on your computer. I highly recommend the ActiveState free version of Python 2.6. On Mac OS X and Linux, the correct python is already installed.

Sorry but given the rules for this site, help with using a specific tool can not be posted, nor can links to the tools themselves. So if in trouble ask on that blog. Pick the sub-forum on the main blog page that most closely associates with what you are trying to do and post a question there if you can't figure things out from the READMEs.

My wife uses the Nook. I'm using the Kindle. I'm not going to pay for two copies of a book. The Calibre plug-in just makes book management that much easier.

I will say that if Amazon's goal with their DRM was to make copying difficult for the very casual buyer, they've succeeded. I've worked in IT for years and it took me a bit of futzing around and forum searching to figure it out. The tools aren't ready for the unwashed masses.

Meanwhile, we, with lives away from our keyboard, await the plug-in appliance.

Thanks to everyone developing these tools - the Calibre plug-ins seem to work like a charm. Do they strip the "social DRM" info from the resulting file?

The only thing that relates to the "social DRM" info" is some hash handling
data. The actual social DRM info was never in the file(s).
The actual name and credit card number is never there, and there is no
practical way to derive the info from the hash data. (It only works one
way, you can't reverse the process.)

Luck;
Ken

None of the de-drm tools make any attempt to remove any possible 'original purchaser' identification date from the ebooks.

From statements they've made in various places, and comments in the code, it seems clear they they only want people to use the tools to gain access to their own books.
