$249 is inexpensive? I believe I read on some web site that is the expected price.

Compared to 7" Android tablets priced higher than iPads, it sure is. Remember, people were paying $260 for ereaders just four months ago.

There's room for two Nooks - eInk and color LCD.
First the market for the audiences mentioned in your message is small. Even B&N can be successful here, I am not sure how much it can contribute to its bottom line.

Second, once Nook goes Color and LCD, it's drawing additional competitors: iPad and Android pads. The windows for success is very small. Once the price of Android pads goes down to $200-$300 range in two years, single function LCD device will have no market.

If the rumor is true, I feel B&N is fighting two uphill battles. One losing one to Kindle on the e-ink front. One "no long term victory" one on the color front.

Nook Kids preview page is up now. Notice how the URL redirect uses both Nook Kids and Nook Color.

When aimed at children, students, and casual readers, a Nook Color doesn't have to be a full fledged tablet.

Likewise, when tablet prices drop, Nook Color will also drop. Additionally, B&N isn't locked into a color reader. They could just as easily improve the specs and successfully compete with other tablets.

B&N is starting to get aggressive in markets very few others are doing - students and kids (Nook Study and Nook Kids). By focusing on both content and hardware, they're priming themselves to be a dominate and driving force in the future of eEducation.

Also, not everyone needs a full spec'd color tablet. One aimed at content consumption (casual reading, textbooks, children's interactive books, magazines, newspapers, email, music, video, and casual web browsing) at half the price can sell quite well if marketed correctly.

Still not convinced. Will see tomorrow if B&N can deliver something better than the rumors.

Darn, I was hoping it would be, like 9 am or so (ET) so when I woke up here in Seattle, there'd already be a link posted.

Well, in that case, B&N YOU LOSE. I'm going out right now and buy a Kindle just to show you you can't mess around with people's dreams.

No. Wait. There is a difference between dreams and delusions. First, that they care. Second that I deluded myself into believing B&N had gotten the memo that it ALL ABOUT ME!!

Oh. okay.

Not interested in a Kindle under any circumstances, but threatening to buy one "instead" seems to be the currently accepted tantrum. Besides, its only an announcement, and I'm just casually interested in what the unit will be and if it will mean a price drop in the nook (not holding my breath).

I'm not actually camped out at the B&N store waiting to place an order. Just looking at options for a second reader for "stay-at-home" use for me and library books for my wife to compliment her iPad.

Okay. Back to my video games.

No. Wait. Let me rephrase: Glad I didn't hit a few keystrokes and order that Kindle.

Anyway, yes. Good deal that the NOOKcolor isn't just another ereader. Nice to have the variety of choices, and bravo for B&N if it works as promised (or, hopefully, better). I will be waiting for reviews because the versatility appeals to me.

Why is it acceptable to have a dedicated eink reader, but a company can't make a dedicated LCD reader? How many of you paid $399 for your first Kindle? Unless a high quality reader has tons of tablet features it isn't a good deal? I'll gladly pay $250 for this thing. Even if it can only be used as a reader. So far, it looks like it can do quite a bit more, but if I want to surf the web or play with applications I just pull out my netbook.
