If your wife will find a reader and a few cookbooks (and maybe a few fiction books you know she wants or old favorites) a great present or not really depends on her. For Valentine's Day my husband has given me a dishwasher, KitchenAide Blender, KitchenAide Food Processor, and an industrial strength cherry pitter (all are very nice, expensive pieces he knew I wanted). One of my sister-in-laws is horrified every year. The other one is jealous as can be. My mother and my mother-in-law are somewhere between amused and jealous. I am very pleased. It really depends on her so I'm not sure what to tell you. Good luck!

On that "will she like it issue": What has she said about your reader? What was her reaction when you first brought it home? Has she ever asked to borrow it or read over your shoulder? Does she ask you questions about how it works? Does she have a laptop and use it a lot? If some yes's, I'd say she's interested enough to probably enjoy one of her own, and would consider it a thoughtful gift. But if she's a total techno-idiot, or rolls her eyes every time you break yours out, then not so much.
I think it's really sweet that you're not only considering it, but taking the time to ask what folks think about it. That's showing a lot of care and thought going into the decision, and that's what gift-giving is all about. And after that sentimental moment, I'll share this anecdote. First-ever birthday gift I got my husband (then-boyfriend): a basketball. Um, yeah. Am I a particularly athletic lady? No, I'm your basic nerdy nose-in-a-book last-picked-for-every-team type girl. His reasoning? "Well, you like basketball!" Sure, my college team, on TV...sigh. Hey, maybe I could show him this thread... ![]() |

The sad part of this story is, I took my 17 YO daughter with me to buy the stero speakers. I had assumed she would watch my back and not let me buy something stupid. But we were laughing about it a year or two later, and my daughter said she knew it was a lousy Christmas gift. I asked her WHY she would let me buy them! She said she was a kid at the time, it wasn't HER place to keep her parents out of trouble. I'm not sure propagation of the race should be a primary goal anymore. |

As one of the previous posters mentioned, the netbook is a much better size for a recipe. Also my netbook will rotate vertically, so I can see both the ingredients and the cooking directions all on one page. cheers |

Hi Glen,
nice gift for a cooking wife. Also a big gift. Important from the expense point of view and for the use of it. To be useful and appreciated in the daily use, which a gift like that deserves to be, it has to be just right. If I were you, ah ah, I am not thanks to the gods, i would consider to eliminate the surprise factor from this particular gift. It makes its choice and implementation even more difficult than what it is. So you do what you knew all arond, you get her two gifts, the surprise one, and the cooking gimmick. This one you discuss with her, in all details. My self that I am the house cook, I would choose a large screen, connected to the net-book. If one thinks to a simple installation a net-book by toshiba that is specialized in tough equipment sounds the good choice. It is not only the recipe ingredients and preparation, but the possibility of watching videos. The e-cooking is moving fast, you want your expensive gift to be appreciated as *you* deserve. Nice gift PS You will appreciate your daughter when she will make you a grandfather. Than you will understand why you did not ... her neck. My oldest is 35, and still a great pain in the neck. My youngest (3.5) is too nice to be worried. She owns the house and wants to do everything herself when I am cooking, so a net-book to keep her busy with some cartoons would be helpful. |

I have discussed a similar issue with my wife but using an old 12" notebook we have lying around. That way PDF's can be displayed with ease. It would only need to run W2K or even Puppy Linux for PDF displays.
But an ereader...Did not think of that aspect... |

When I was doing my initial ereader research:
research with a low vision priority https://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0A...emY0em00&hl=en the still updated largest list of ereaders, tablets, slates https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?...Xc&hl=en#gid=0 I came across the Demy "The Demy is the world's first kitchen-safe digital recipe reader that will revolutionize the way you cook." http://www.mydemy.com/ almost a year ago the price might have been okay but now.......but just thought I would put up the link, do not recall ever seeing it posted anywhere here before Last edited by tomereader; 10-18-2010 at 09:47 AM. |

As for kitchen reading, I saw something in Sam's Club a few months ago. It might have been a Demy; I'm not sure, as I didn't look too closely at it. It did, however, claim to be kitchen-safe, and full of recipes which are undoubtedly useful to people who go beyond "read the back of the box" -- a group of which I, regrettably, am not a member (I'm a whiz at reading the pizza delivery phone number, though!). I have a clear plastic pencil bag for my 505: it's tough, durable, cheap, and very waterproof. |

I'm not even good at that; I order online. I usually hate using the phone, especially if I have to deal with automated answering devices and menus, especially multilayered ones. Domino's uses an Indian call center now and I detest those. Apparently, speaking and understanding English (or whatever it is we speak here in the USA now) isn't a job requirement for most of them.

I use my 650 in the kitchen all the time. As far as splashing and staining, I leave the Reader on the table as I cook on the counter. If it's a fairly involved recipe, I have been known to make a jpg of the recipe file and set it in my screensaver folder for when it times out.
I also have all my recipes and cookbooks loaded so that I can check the ingredients when I'm out and about. (The notes application is also great for recipes and ingredients). |
