As mentioned above, most verizon phones do not have sim cards. They can be used only on the verizon network. While Sprint uses the same system as verizon, cdma, neither will activate a phone from the other company - just policy (security concerns????). With the sim card models (both sprint and verizon) you can use them in Europe. I've also read that you can use them on, say, AT&T but you need to get the proper service books and do some other settings. You still cannot use sim-equipped verizon on sprint or vice versa - again, just policy. The sim does not affect anything on those networks in the US on their own networks. So, yes, there are definitely limitations on switching carriers and trying to use your "old" phone.

Such silliness. Imagine if our home phones were set up this way. Different carriers requiring different networks requiring carrier specific phones.

I'll be glad when the "air" is standardized.

So if you want to change operator, you need to buy a new phone. That sucks. At least simlocking can be undone...
Not "security concern", more like "money concern".

I'll never complain about "locking" in france anymore.

Windows Mobile is essentially dead. Verizon will carry Windows Phone 7 devices eventually, but of course it runs completely different applications.
