I've seen this myself with my Kindle 2 when plugged into certain USB chargers. The USB spec says they can supply a max of 1500mA for a USB charger. My thought is that ones that don't meet that spec have an auto-cutoff for devices trying to draw more current than they can supply to prevent damage to the charger. I'd say find one that is rated at least at 550mA. If it isn't rated at all it probably supplies less than that and although it may work for some devices it is probably insufficient for the Sony.
It is unlikely that any of these chargers would damage the Sony as long as they are within the voltage specification which allows for a maximum of 5.25v. It is more likely the Sony could damage the charger if they didn't have a limiter built into it. I've tried a couple of generic USB chargers with the Sony cable. One rated at 550mA for my BlueAnt hands-free and the other at 800mA for my Nyko PS3 controller charger. Both indicted they were charging the unit, however the Nyko charger made the Sony act like it was plugged into a computer. In other words I could not read while it was charging. I also tried it with a "Monster GreenPower™ Digital PowerCenter™ MDP 900" that had a built in USB charging port. The Sony acted like it was plugged into a PC and was not charging the battery. I'm sure it was supplying the correct voltage as it has to be the standard 5V, but I could not find anywhere on the unit or the manual what current it is capable of supplying. I suspect if you find one rated at 500mA to 1500mA it will probably work, but it could be hit or miss. I suggest if you have any USB chargers lying around to just try them. If you don't see it charging in a few moments, then it probably won't work. I have seen a few chargers actually drain the batteries of USB devices because although they would not charge, they didn't allow the device to go into sleep mode either. I should have read that Wikipedia article a bit more.

When I tried to connect my husband's new Sony 650 with the Sony cable, to a generic AC adapter, the Sony screen had a message that the unit could detect no "power source".
The necessity of having to purchase an actual Sony adapter is, to my mind, very annoying ... and had I known that, I might have rethought my purchase. |

Don't see where necessity to buy Sony AC adaptor comes in... read some more of this and several other threads relating to PSUs and you'll find lots of alternatives, all cheaper than Sony...

yea its not actually 'necessary'. The usb cable it comes with works fine anyway. Its just a convenience.
That said, I do think at $240 it would have been nice for them to throw in both a cover and an ac adapter, when competing readers are half the price (nook, kindle, etc). Although to their credit they did throw in the cover, with the ongoing promotion of the free lighted cover. |

I will be trying the AC adapter for my mom's cell phone this weekend. It uses the same USB connector. If it works and the specs are good enough, I can buy one of those.

I read somewhere on these forums that a Blackberry charger worked for the Sony PRS 650 ... and since my son has had several versions of Blackberry, I asked if he had an extra AC charger. He did ... I got it ... and it works beautifully ...

I received 650 yesterday. Didn't have time to play with it, but I tried to charge it. It had 3 bars, so I plugged in a USB charger that was a part of logitech mouse kit and it charged the reader. How well did it do it? No idea. I wonder whether it can damage the battery if it is not the exact specs?

I once accidentally plugged in my netbook's power adapter into my wireless headphones to charge them, and they basically blew up (I heard a pop, smelled smoke, and yea, the headphones never worked again). Even tho the connector 'fit' into it perfectly (which is why I accidentally did it). Let that be a lesson to everyone out there. Last edited by ebooker; 11-05-2010 at 08:58 AM. |

There's a slight difference with USB/mini/micro USB connections... they are USB! This is a standard... they are all in the 5-5.2v range and current is irrelevant as long as there is enough (minimum should be 500mA more is better), devices take what they need not what's available. Something needing 1,000ma won't blow if the charger can provide 2,000mA, it'll get what it needs and the charger will be happy because it isn't overloaded
![]() Previous problems with chargers for other kit involved the fact that the connectors may have been standard sizes but there was no standard for voltage so you coul have identical barrel connectors on chargers which offered anything from 3v to 25v... not good as you found but doesn't apply to USBs of whatever size. Only problem comes from whether PSU is set to act as pure PSU or computer USB... both work with 350-950 but one allows you to read whilst charging whereas the other acts like you plugged into computer and may not charge. Check the forums for info from people who hav tried various PSUs. ![]() Quote:

FWIW, the one i bought on ebay for $4.49 shipped, works great. It was titled "Dual 2 Port USB Wall AC Charger Adapter for iPhone iPod", from seller named 'eforcity-select'. Specs on it are: "Input: AC 100 - 240 V Output: DC 5 - 5.5 V / 1000 mA". |
