20,000 Leagues under the Sea, but ONLY the Walter James Miller or the Walter James Miller + Frederick Paul Walter translations. The original translation was a hideous hack job.

Of Dante's Inferno, I favor the John Ciardi translation.

Jay Rubin's translation of many of Haruki Murakami's novels are superb. Not only does he understand Japanese, which Murakami writes in, he also understands the literaryness of the books.

I've added a response to the review, and suggest that we all do!

PS - I recommend that you click on FlamingMudkip's name and read his other reviews - four pages' worth!

Thanks Amy!

As for German and Polish Irecommend Erik Simon as translator, Having Sapkowskis short stories in original (the witcher prequel books) and having read the german translation I think he does a unspeakably great job. gets the jokes and - am not sure how to say/explain it. he gets the "flow" or "flavour" every language has.
