yes but we are talking about space. Space fills up much quicker with MP3 files than books so, if audio books are big deal to you, having and SD card slot is key.

Again Amazon refuses to let you guys have it.

I listen to *a lot* of audiobooks. I've been an Audible member since 2001 and own a large number of audiobooks. I only listen to audibooks on my iPod (I think it's a better device for listening). Even on my iPod, I don't store all the audiobooks I own (not even the iPod could hold them all ). Only the 1-3 at a time and then I delete them for the next batch. If one is getting audiobooks from the library, I don't think space on the nook or the Kindle is really going to be an issue because one can only borrow so many at a time. So IMO, and SD card slot is not "key" to listening to audiobooks.

not key to you because you have to find a round about way to spread your files around etc. so to you NO

but If someone, like my wife likes to have all her books, either written or audible all in one place and not scattered about between mp3 players, ebook readers, computers etc then exandable memory for an ever expanding library, Yes, Yes it is Key.

Then maybe you should have stated it that way in the first place in stead of the blanket statement you used.

Owning both doesn't make your subjective experience any more valuable than those you claim are B&N shills.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both readers. I would also expect that people who have Nooks and like them would show up in threads that involve the Nook.

I still kind of want an eReader and am still trying to decide between the Kindle and the Nook.

I have both apps for my iPod touch. I have bought ONE ebook from the Kindle store (just a little travel ebook for a specific location). I have downloaded a lot of free ebooks from the Nook store (when they had the free classics offer July 4th weekend, for example, I downloaded several).

I also buy audible.com audio books. Currently, I listen to them on my iPod touch. Kindle has support for them, Nook does not.

Nook has a easily replaceable battery in case of permanent battery death. Kindle I read you have to send it in (yes, supposedly you CAN replace the battery yourself, but I am not that technology advanced and not sure if I could trust myself to be able to do this, plus, I'd be afraid of damaging the device).

Can you see my dilemma?

Well, in my experience, if you go to a B&N they will let you play with a nook for as long as you like. The Kindles on display at Target run a demo program so it's really hard to get a real feel for the K3. I would suggest going to a B&N to play with the nook and ordering a K3 which has a 30 day full refund (minus return shipping but no restocking fee). If you like the nook, but it and return the Kindle. If you like the Kindle, keep it.

I'm not sure if all Best Buys carry them, but my husband was able to try out and purchase his K3 from Best Buy. The fact that Amazon is headquartered in our area could possibly have something to do with it, but just thought I'd put it out there. But, maybe they are at other Best Buys as well.

Amazon allowed it on the Kindle 1. Then they got rid of it. Probably because there were a ton of problems with indexing the like and because the K2 could hold 2 GB worth of material. The K3 can hold 4 GB worth of material. Dropping the SD slot in favor of additional memory made the K2 thinner and lighter, something that is important to lots of people.

Most folks I know who have an e-reader have an MP3 player with much better capabilities then their e-reader.

The Kindle, and all e-readers, are meant to be readers first. The Kindle has the capacity to hold and play audiobooks and MP3's. It is pretty basic but that is because it is a reader, not an MP3 player. If I want to losten to music or a book, I'll use my IPod not my Kindle.

Can you see my dilemma?

Nope.

I had the K1 with the SD slot and replaceable battery. I used them exactly 0 times in 18 months. My K1 battery is still chugging along just fine. I don't use it all tha tmuch now because I have a DXG.

The life cycle on the batteries in my DXG and in the K3 is suppose to be something like 5 years. My money is on people buying a new version long before having to worry about replacing the battery. I don't worry about the battery with my IPod's, I am not worried about it with my DXG.

There are plenty of free books available for the Kindle, some here, some at Amazon, some at other locations. There are posters here and at other sites who claim that they have yet to play for a book on their Kindles. I am sure there are Nook owners who can say the same thing.

To be honest with you, I wouldn't be worried about the audio books. You have a device for listening to them that works pretty well. It probably works better then whatever is on the Nook or the Kindle.

If you use Audible (an Amazon company) for your audiobooks, you can link your Kindle to your Audible account so that your audiobooks appear in your Archives on the Kindle and can be downloaded (over wifi, not 3G). It's very slick, IMO, and audiobooks are always there in the cloud, just like the regular Kindle books.

You can also store podcasts and non-Audible MP3 audiobooks (including ones from your local elibrary) in the "audible" folder on your Kindle so they show up in your booklists. I like that Amazon doesn't just limit this feature to Audible-branded content. It also allows you to keep audiobooks and music separate for better organization. Then you can store just music files in the "music" folder.

To the OP, I would not set your expectations very high for audio player capability on any ereader brand if you are interested in audio content besides audiobooks. The features are very basic. Don't expect to create multiple playlists and have full control over sorting what order your tracks play. Also it can drain the battery fairly quickly. I always keep my iPod or phone around if I want to read and listen to music at the same time. Only rarely do I plug my headphones into my ereader.

This is something I've been pleasantly surprised about with my Kindle. Other than syncing, Amazon makes little (or no) distinction between "official" Kindle content and personal documents/audiobooks. Although I might have become used to it over time, it bothered me that the nook has B&N content and side-loaded content segregated. (Well, bothered me enough that I didn't purchase a nook.) As someone mentioned in another thread, for a reasonable price, I'd be willing to pay Amazon to sync my personal content as well. iBooks syncs everything including personal documents - and does it properly, IMO. iBooks syncs the "latest" page read, not the "furthest" as Kindle does.
