Even though I probably wouldn't say they were the absolute best novels of all time, I'd like to throw in Gustave Flaubert's Madam Bovary and L'Education Sentimental if only for their wonderfully biting sarcasm and irony, along with great story-telling. | |

It really depends on what I'm in the mood for, really. And what I've been reading recently. I also wonder on what would be considered 'classic'. Martian Chronicles is a good one. |

Ivanhoe It might not be the very best, but it's close and doesn't get enough attention, so I'll claim it. Following that, I'll go with: LOTR Quo Vadis War and Peace Odyssey & Illiad... ...so many more, this is impossible. lol |

There are so many books I have yet to read that I can have no meaningful opinion on which is the "best novel of all time". Of those I have read, my favourite 19th century book is Great Expectations, though Jude the Obscure comes a close second. Of the 20th century, I choose 1984. The book which made me cry the most was A Prayer for Owen Meany (the only time I have genuinely not wanted to turn the pages over because I so wished to not allow to happen what was going to happen). Oh, and then there was that selected collection of Biggles stories which I picked up one day as a 11 year old and didn't sleep for 24 hours as I read the whole collection in one sitting. |

For me, it's Moby Dick by Herman Melville. I also thing the movie with Gregory Peck is awesome.
