Frankie Pickle and the Mathematical Menace by Eric Wight -> free pre-order (US Kindle)

Quote:
Frankie is struggling. This time it's not keeping his room clean, and it's not winning the Pine Run 3000. It is something much more serious: MATH! He doesn't get it and everytime he tries to do it, it just seems impossible. So instead of tackling his quiz, the numbers become unconquerable monsters. When he finally shares his problem with his family (and his best friend Kenny) at the dinner table, they ban together to create a math obstacle course to teach Frankie everything from subtraction to long division in the most fun way imaginable! Will Frankie and his imagination be able to overcome Mathematical Menace that haunts him?

Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon--And the Journey of a Generation by Sheila Weller

Quote:
A groundbreaking and irresistible biography of three of America's most important musical artists -- Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon -- charts their lives as women at a magical moment in time.

Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon remain among the most enduring and important women in popular music. Each woman is distinct. Carole King is the product of outer-borough, middle-class New York City; Joni Mitchell is a granddaughter of Canadian farmers; and Carly Simon is a child of the Manhattan intellectual upper crust. They collectively represent, in their lives and their songs, a great swath of American girls who came of age in the late 1960s. Their stories trace the arc of the now mythic sixties generation -- female version -- but in a bracingly specific and deeply recalled way, far from cliché. The history of the women of that generation has never been written -- until now, through their resonant lives and emblematic songs.

Filled with the voices of many dozens of these women's intimates, who are speaking in these pages for the first time, this alternating biography reads like a novel -- except it's all true, and the heroines are famous and beloved. Sheila Weller captures the character of each woman and gives a balanced portrayal enriched by a wealth of new information.

Girls Like Us is an epic treatment of midcentury women who dared to break tradition and become what none had been before them -- confessors in song, rock superstars, and adventurers of heart and soul.

Mission Accomplished! Or How We Won the War in Iraq: The Experts Speak by Christopher Cerf, Victor S. Navasky

Quote:
Mission Accomplished! Or How We Won the War in Iraq is the definitive collection -- systematically categorized, indexed, and footnoted for your convenience -- of authoritative misinformation, disinformation, misunderstanding, miscalculation, egregious prognostication, boo-boos, and just plain lies, about the Iraq War.

"Never before has such a large and diverse group of experts been so unanimously in favor of a particular national policy as they were in the case of the U.S. invasion of Iraq," note Christopher Cerf and Victor Navasky, who, as co-founders of the Institute of Expertology, the nation's leading purveyor of expertise on expertise, were uniquely qualified to assemble this impressive collection. "In the face of such a consensus, we had no choice but to ask ourselves, 'Could the iron law of expertology -- the experts are never right -- be wrong?'"

At once an entertainment, a cautionary tale, a critique of mass media, a reference tool, and a postwar manifesto, Mission Accomplished! presents, as no book has before, the collective wisdom of all those who are presumed to know what they talking about on the subject of America's adventure in Iraq. As this hilarious, yet depressing, volume demonstrates, they don't.

Lucky for Good by Susan Patron -> pre-order (US Kindle)

Quote:
If you think that the County Health Department can just swoop in and close down Brigitte’s Hard Pan CafÉ, then you obviously don’t know Klinke Ken, Short Sammy, the “ologists”, or the residents of Hard Pan—or Lucky and Brigitte for that matter. They’ll have to move mountains to stop it (okay, not mountains, just an old cabin down a mountain), but there’s not a chance in H.E. Double Hockey Sticks that Mr. Stu Burping of the Health Department will shut the doors on the cafÉ for good. Will there be a grand re-opening? You bet there will!

And speaking of H.E. Double Hockey Sticks, that’s been on Miles’ mind a lot lately. He’s putting down his dinosaur books for fear of ending up there. His mother, Justine, has returned to Hard Pan with a bit of fire and brimstone on her lips. Miles wants to please her—and Jesus, but having Justine back in his life has made things all complicated and knotty. But, that’s just the way it is with family sometimes—like with Lucky and her dad. He means well, she thinks, but the way he treats her (as if she doesn’t exist) makes it hard to know what to do…and even harder to say goodbye.

The final book in the well-loved, award-winning series introduces new friends—Stick, Lucky’s Facebook friend and long-lost aunt, and Ollie, the MUCH bigger boy that Lucky socks in the face—and old friends—Paloma, Lincoln, Miles and 43 residence of Hard Pan. In facing deep questions of belief and faith, truth and meaning, this concluding book continues to explore the vast, rocky, landscape of the human heart. As always, Lucky is brave and foolish, impulsive and tender, vulnerable and determined. Ultimately she forges her own path: Lucky for good.

The Lord Is My Shepherd: The Psalm 23 Mysteries by Debbie Viguie (Thriller/Christian Fiction)

Quote:
Cindy’s church is getting ready to celebrate Easter, and Jeremiah’s Temple is preparing for Passover when Cindy literally stumbles over the body of an unknown man lying dead in the sanctuary. The church was locked, and a bloody cross necklace on the floor seems to be the only clue. The killer is likely a member of the congregation, but there are hints that similar deaths have happened in the past. Are Cindy and Jeremiah dealing with a serial killer? They have to unravel the clues before Easter Sunday arrives and more people die.

Cindy and Jeremiah come from two different worlds, even though they work right next door to each other. Cindy is a strong Christian who lives a normal but somewhat dull life, working as a church secretary. Jeremiah is a Reformed rabbi with a mysterious past full of danger and excitement. But one eventful Easter/Passover week, the two find themselves working together to solve a murder and stop a serial killer from striking again. Solving the mystery should put an end to their alliance, but the church secretary and the rabbi quickly find themselves enmeshed in another mystery. Soon the two form a friendly alliance and friendship, exploring personal history and faith and growing closer with each passing adventure. Despite their differences Cindy and Jeremiah find a lot of common ground.

The Ghost Shrink, The Accidental Gigolo & The Poltergeist Accountant: A Tickle My Fantasy story by Vivi Andrews

Quote:
Product Description
It’s not smart to piss off a poltergeist… A Tickle My Fantasy story.

It’s bad enough to be sexually frustrated. But as a medium, it means until Lucy Cartwright gets some, she’s doomed. Oh no, not to death. Worse. To nightly visitations by recently deceased, wanna-be Cassanovas without the bodies to back it up. Then a living, breathing fantasy arrives on her doorstep, and Lucy thinks her dry spell is at an end.
Much as he would like to be Lucy’s personal gigolo, PI Jake Cox has a job to do. He’s been sent to prevent her from getting laid until a particular horny phantom—and key witness in his mob investigation—pays her a visit. The real challenge? Keeping his own hands off Lucy long enough to get the job done.
Or the lonely, geeky ghost of a murdered mob accountant could rip a hole in the fabric of the universe…

An Unwanted Hunger by Ciana Stone

Quote:
Product Description
Book 1 in the Soul of V-Kar series.

Passion this strong is dangerous. They both know it. Mortal enemies, their respective factions have been at war since the dawn of man. Resa is a Dhampir, bred and trained to hunt Vampyres. Constantine is a prince among the Vampyre, the oldest and most lethal.Nothing good can come of this hunger, this need that drives them relentlessly toward one another. Neither reason nor devotion to duty can stay their need. There is but one way to quench the thirst that drives them. Once sated, they can return to the battle and see which one, if either, is left standing. But one drink from the cup of desire serves only to magnify the hunger. One act of lust that could alter them forever, changing the course of destiny.

Emotions: Freedom from Anger, Jealousy & Fear by Osho

Quote:
Product Description
Strong emotions that we don't know how to handle effectively lie at the core of so many difficulties in the life of the individual. They can affect our relationships with loved ones, and how we function in our work. They play a profound role in how we feel about ourselves, and can even affect our physical health. And we are too often trapped in the dilemma of "expression" versus "repression." Expressing our emotions can often hurt others, but by repressing them - even in the benevolent guise of "self-control" - we risk hurting ourselves. Osho offers a third alternative, which is to understand the roots of our emotions and to develop the knack of watching them and learning from them as they arise, rather than being "taken over" by them. Eventually we find that even the most challenging and difficult situations no longer have the power to provoke us and cause us pain. Osho's unique insight into the workings of the mind, the heart, and the essence or "being" of the individual goes far beyond the understandings of conventional psychology. Over more than three decades of work with people from all walks of life, he has developed simple techniques and insights to help modern-day men and women to rediscover their own inner silence and wisdom.

This isn't free, but since Scrabble was posted here before, I'm guessing it's fine to post this here too. There's another game from EA that's available for US Kindles - EA Solitaire (12 Card Games to Play on Kindle) for $3.99.

Quote:
Product Description

Play Solitaire, on Kindle - anytime, anywhere.
EA Solitaire contains 12 different modes of play--the Klondike game you know and love, as well as 11 other variants: Pyramid, Yukon, Golf, Freecell, Wasp, Peaks, Canfield, Spiderette, Eliminator, Easthaven, and Baker's Dozen. It's a lot of card-game fun for both experts and novices alike.
This version of Solitaire comes with handy features such as a "Tutorial Mode" that will get you started on the different game play variants, optional in-game "Tips" as well as an "Auto-Move" feature that will help you out when you're stuck and don't know what to do next. For the Klondike game, there is even a "Vegas" mode to track your winnings in (virtual) dollars.
Enjoy the card game you know and love on Kindle.
Another game! Triple Town (A Puzzle Strategy Game for Kindle) by Spry Fox for $2.99

Quote:
Product Description

Triple Town is an original strategy game in which you try to grow the greatest possible city. The larger the city you build, the more points you score. You build your city by matching three or more game-pieces: combine three grasses to make a flower, three flowers to make a bush, three bushes to make a tree... until you've filled the board with houses, cathedrals and castles. Along the way, you'll have to outwit evil barbarians and wizards who will try to block your progress.
This is a game that can be played for minutes or hours at a time. You'll have to think several turns ahead if you want to avoid inevitable gridlock as unfinished buildings, barbarians and wizards start to pile up. And sometimes, if you're lucky, you'll be helped along by a magical crystal (which combines with anything) or a powerful bomb (which wipes nuisances off the board). But luck won't save you forever!
How large can you grow your dream city before the board fills and the game ends?

Chinatown Beat, by Henry Chang

Book Description
Detective Jack Yu grew up in Chinatown. Some of his friends are criminals now; some are dead. Jack has just been transferred to his old neighborhood, where 99 percent of the cops are white. Unlike the others, confused by the residents who speak another language even when they’re speaking English, Jack knows what’s going on.

He is confronted with a serial rapist who preys on young Chinese girls. Then Uncle Four, an elderly and respected leader of the charitable Hip Ching Society and member of the Hong Kong-based Red Circle Triad, is gunned down. Jack learns that benevolent Uncle Four had a gorgeous young mistress imported from Hong Kong. And she is missing.

To solve these crimes, Jack turns to an elderly fortune teller, an old friend of his, in addition to employing modern police methods. This debut mystery power-fully conveys the sights, sounds, and smells of Chinatown, as well as the attitudes of its inhabitants.
