The Lp records have gone from the thousands to less than 200 and those I hope to finish by summer's end. A while back I picked up a turntable (not exact, but very close) that has a built in amp and connected it directly to the line in of the audio card. I have transfered most of what I had that had not been replaced over the years. The 45s are now down to less than 50 and they should be finished by month's end.

In the office area I had to turn some bookcases on their side so they stick out into the room making it almost a maze to get around so that I could fit even more bookcases in. The walls alone were not enough.

The basement looks like an old library stack but without enough ease space between the verticals. To the average person I am sure that the racks and bookcases are worth more than the stuff contained in them.

I remember when my wife and I first moved into our house, both being book lovers, that I envisioned one of the rooms being such a library with labyrinthine book shelves to hold everything. That idea went the way of the dodo when our second child was born and we needed it as a bedroom, and we got tired of having a wall of books in our living room.

So we have, over the years, done occasional clear-outs of books that as we thought more carefully about them we realized we would never read a second time, and we passed them on or sold them on Amazon.

But with this reader, I am so thrilled that I can have the equivalent of a small-town library on a single DVD (thank you, Project Gutenberg!) and can move them easily between my computer and my soon-to-be-purchased Sony Reader. Once everything is in place, I plan to get rid of the books that are in our house only for me if they are duplicated in PG (speaking of which, I give a small annual donation to PG and would encourage all of us who have downloaded lots of their books to do the same).

The thought of having various collections on different SD cards and having all that with me wherever I go is so thrilling and really brings home how far all this technology stuff has come.

I've made bookcases suspended from the ceiling because all the walls were taken. I've also built bookshelves dividing rooms, like a wall. My favorite is a bookcase over a doorway, it seems weird but with the number of doors one can find in a house and the fact that you can install a case on both sides of a wall you get a lot of free space that way. When you look at it most houses are built following a cubic shape, with the upper corners totally wasted. There is absolutely nothing done with it. The best unobtrusive library is created from that upper foot and a half all around the room and you can install lighting, built in, right underneath it.
