I've got my custom screensavers and Niluje's default fonts installed (thank you for all your work). Everything's working entirely smoothly - I don't need Korean/Chinese/Indian characters, thank you (a fortnight, so far)....

I have no desire to tinker further for the sake of it. Heck, Amazon will have to come out with a firmware update that offers some really significant improvements for me to consider installing it.

Having said that, I suppose it's always useful to hear someone's experience that reminds us we have to take responsibility for what we choose to do to our own kit. Presumably, Amazon can spy on what we put on our Kindles pretty easily, if they decide this kind of thing really bothers them.

I'd just like to point out, that, in itself, both hacks can essentially be reduced to *one* single command line whose sole purpose is to swap one folder for another. There's nothing fancy or really 'hackish' involved.

So, while there may be some behavioral changes (or quite possibly just simple bugs in the system/framework, but that's not my place to say, nor can I be sure about that) in the fw 3.x framework that can cause things to go a bit weird in certain particular conditions, particularly on the fonts side on things (solely because it's something used constantly, and not from time to time like the ss), the worst that could happen because of the hacks should be fixed by a simple restart, be it soft or hard.
In the meantime, I'm working on ways to workaround these potential issues so that the process can be as painless as possible.

Aside from this, like jswinden said, the K3 uses different font rendering settings, and that can be far more unforgiving toward crappy fonts than on the K2. But that's another issue entierely, and that doesn't really have much to do with the hacks. We just happen to use the renderer, nothing we can do about it.

Also, I'd like to ask the people who have no idea what they're talking about to refrain from flaming/trolling, but I guess that may be too much to ask... .

(And I'm not talking about the OP here, I just wish we'd heard from him over in the dev forum before, that might have helped avoid such a troll-inducing thread ).

thank you so much for adding to the thread I feel much happier about how the hack works now. I was worried about it doing something to my kindle, but feel reassured now, thank you.
I may even give it a go myself in a few weeks, I am so sick of Emily now, she drives me crazy.

Nothing to worry about!

This happened to me as well. The fonts are screwed up. Just copy some other fonts into the linkfonts folder.
Droid_Sans, Fertigo Pro work. Georgia2 does not. Because that's the one I like, I just copied the bold & italic versions from the windows fonts; the regular one is good; the others seem to cause the problem.
See the fonts hack for more info.

Everything went fine, had my preferred screen savers and font back on my K3 and one day later suddenly I could not open the book I was reading, could not reacquire it from archives, could not open other books and when I tried to run the uninstall the hacks but could not open the settings page. Clicking "Settings" just brings me back to the home page.

Amazon is sending me a new K3. Hopefully I won't be charged for it once they dig into the old one.

Be advised.

OK. Because they sure do work well right out of the box.
?
Think an inexperienced Kindle-user like me could do it though? I would love to have the new ones.

Wait, so you mean I can add my own screen savers and fonts right out of the box? What's that? No?

If you have no reason to tinker with your Kindle, that's great. But do us all a favor and avoid wagging a finger at those who want to hack their Kindle.

As far as I see, it is still cooking and not ready yet. I installed older
version on my bsd node and found it pretty perfect for epub, mobi
and chm. I also had an occasion to see last version on win and the
rpoblem showing epub files. It is centered, justified by the middle
line and I did not success changing it. I assume next version would
handle that bug.
No doubt k3 port of fbreader will be on the very top of threads.

Bingo! Georgia2 is the font I installed. So are you saying replacing the fonts with the originals or the ones you cite above and doing a hard re-start should take care of the problem?

if your description is accurate, the primary cause of the problem had nothing to do with the hacking

I had a similar problem with the font hack - the first time I just used the "restore to factory setting" and all went back to normal, the second time I was even unable to access that menu item but I was able to use recovery mode to get it all back to factory state, I did not try a third time :-)

Here's how: http://blog.laptopmag.com/kindle-cri...#axzz16DtMZd2G

My problem was that after the hacks the menu items did not work properly anymore and then it would boot to a blank screen - dunno what the reason was, but I hacked my Sony 500, my 505, and my PocketPro all without problems and will continue to use hacks, after all, I always learn from my mistakes and most of the time hacks work just fine and I am simply in awe of the people who come up with them, they do such outstanding work!

You don't even need to do a reset/recovery if you still have access to the userstore over USB, but I'm gonna stop repating myself on that point, just read the docs...
