Bull! If anyone has serious vision problems, I could understand this comment. If one's eyes are even remotely normal - I've got strong near-sightedness - then one can read in just about any light level. I routinely use a simple two-LED night lite to read in bed - and just about any typical 75W or better (or CFL equivalent) will do for average reading.

Ok, so I'm probably still one of the newest Kindle owners here, but I feel my K3 is very readable. I have terrible nearsightedness combined with middle-aged guy near-vision loss and I don't have troubles reading my screen until it's so dark I can't read a print book either.

The lighted cover's LEDs aren't particularly bright but are definitely adequate for reading when the room is completely dark. I'm a tech geek from the late '70s (who would have rather done tech stuff instead of medicine) and still think e-ink technology is amazing!

I think the current level of grey is just right - the contrast is perfect.
Most paper backs do not use white paper anyway.

It's no bull. I have 20/20 vision. Your brain on the other hand does not seem to be remotely normal, going on a tirade just because someone has a different opinion to yours.

I've found that in bright light, if you turn the Kindle at a 135° angle or so, the background appears completely white. It's a little tiring, but it works for me.

I just don't get a lot of this thread.

I say this because when I read a paper book, I use reading glasses but when using my Kindle, with the same font setting as a paper book, I don't feel the need for my glasses..... the Kindle (IN MY OPINION WITH MY EYE SIGHT), is much easier to read than a book.

Not to worry, Lazer. Some people just can't be satisfied no matter what.

All that bleach used to make paper white is killing Mother Earth!

Hark! I hear her dying gasp.

And also, I find the background is less gray the brighter the light.
