There's a lot of great stories in this one -- it's probably one of my favorite Ellison collections.
Thanks, I picked up Deathbird Stories by Harlan Ellison from Kobo (link) and it's couponable too.

Unfortunately Nightwings by Robert Silverberg (Kobo) shows as not being available in Canada.

1Q84 by Haruki Murakami has dropped to $3.25 at Amazon.com & Google Play
Quote:
The year is 1984 and the city is Tokyo.

A young woman named Aomame follows a taxi driver’s enigmatic suggestion and begins to notice puzzling discrepancies in the world around her. She has entered, she realizes, a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 —“Q is for ‘question mark.’ A world that bears a question.” Meanwhile, an aspiring writer named Tengo takes on a suspect ghostwriting project. He becomes so wrapped up with the work and its unusual author that, soon, his previously placid life begins to come unraveled.

As Aomame’s and Tengo’s narratives converge over the course of this single year, we learn of the profound and tangled connections that bind them ever closer: a beautiful, dyslexic teenage girl with a unique vision; a mysterious religious cult that instigated a shoot-out with the metropolitan police; a reclusive, wealthy dowager who runs a shelter for abused women; a hideously ugly private investigator; a mild-mannered yet ruthlessly efficient bodyguard; and a peculiarly insistent television-fee collector.

A love story, a mystery, a fantasy, a novel of self-discovery, a dystopia to rival George Orwell’s—1Q84 is Haruki Murakami’s most ambitious undertaking yet: an instant best seller in his native Japan, and a tremendous feat of imagination from one of our most revered contemporary writers.

This eBook edition includes a Reading Group Guide.

Whispersync for voice audio for an additional $3.95

Not a Drop to Drink by Mindy McGinnis [HarperCollins] is $1.99 at most retailers.

https://play.google.com/store/books/...d=rx2RVJyX3lwC
Quote:
Teenage Lynn has been taught to defend her pond against every threat: drought, a snowless winter, coyotes, and most important, people looking for a drink. She makes sure anyone who comes near the pond leaves thirsty—or doesn't leave at all. Confident in her own abilities, Lynn has no use for the world beyond the nearby fields and forest. But when strangers appear, the mysterious footprints by the pond, nighttime threats, and gunshots make it all too clear Lynn has exactly what they want, and they won't stop until they get it. . . .

The Falcon Throne by Karen Miller is $2.99 (just released 09/09/14) right now at...
Amazon.com | B&N | Kobo | Google Play | eBooks.com | Amazon CA | Amazon UK (£2.99)
Quote:
WHEN KINGDOMS CLASH, EVERY CROWN WILL BE TARNISHED BY THE BLOODY PRICE OF AMBITION.

A bastard lord leads a rebellion against his tyrant king -- and must live with the consequences of victory.

A royal widow plots to win her daughter's freedom from the ambitious lords who would control them both.

An orphaned prince sets his eyes on regaining his father's stolen throne.

And two brothers, divided by ambition, will learn that the greater the power, the more dangerous the game.

A masterful tale of the thirst for power and the cost of betrayal. Epic fantasy at its bloodiest, action-packed best.

A book I have read and recommend

Dark Lady (The Wine of the Gods Book 8) by Pam Uphoff is free at present and quite recent.

From an Amazon.com review

Although this book comes at the end of what we have so far in the series, it is, in many ways a standalone.

The majority of the story consists of a new world with brand new characters, and one not brand new characters who has forgotten her previous life. Thus you get to learn about the way this universe is put together and not feel that you have missed something by not having read the earlier books.

This book is pretty light-hearted. There's some romance, some interesting world building and a lot of exciting adventures. It's a very good book to read when you just want some fun.

Open Road Media is running a promotion on sfnal mystery/crime, which I found via an advert on Tor.com, mostly marked down to $1.99 each, couponable @ Kobo.

Among the included are the 1st in William Shatner's Tek War series, and books by Robert Sheckley, Greg Bear, Fritz Leiber, John Barnes, Simon R. Green, William C. Dietz, Walter Mosley, etc.

I just bought myself Liz Williams' The Snake Agent, 1st in her Detective Inspector Chen novels set in a futuristic fantasy East Asia, which I've been meaning to try since back when they were still published by Night Shade and sold @ Baen's webstore, and the only reason why I haven't snapped up George Alec Effinger's When Gravity Fails is because I already own all the Marid Audran novels from a prior Fictionwise purchase before B&N killed them off (if you bought the recent Open Road Humble Bundle, then you already have the short fiction collection that goes with this series). I think I also have the Greg Bear book from Fictionwise and possibly the Leiber and Sheckley and Barnes titles and will have to check before buying.

Anyway, here's the Open Road promo page that the Tor.com ad led me to.
