I'm so sorry for your loss, BookCat. For free historical romances, have you tried Jeffery Farnol? Black Bartlemy's Treasure or The Broad Highway are both good old-fashioned adventure/romance yarns to read when you're feeling down. Historical accuracy not guaranteed!
