I'm not clear how the wireless link is going to happen. Theresa's computer used to be connected to our network wireless, but we have switched to wired. But, which device is advertising the connection? Or, is this Bluetooth?

To be precise, the computer running calibre must be visible on a WiFi network. There is no requirement that it be connected by WiFi. Mine certainly isn't. The best way to determine if CC will help you is to try it rather than continue to speculate about it. If you don't have a recent Android device then ask a friend with such a device to install CC (Free) and then try that device with your library on your network. If it can connect to a calibre instance on your network then good. If it can't then you can explore other alternatives. FYI: the thread Calibre Companion Android App: Information, Change Log, and FAQ has a lot of information about what CC does, how it works, how it connects, and how to troubleshoot connection problems. |

Ah, I think. Yes, we regularly connect with wireless devices and do things like transfer files from one computer or another, so if that is the kind of connection one needs, we can do it. iPhones seem to predominate in the area, unfortunately, so the borrowing may not be that easy. We'll see. I'll check out the link. Thanks.

Question. One of the things which led to the selection of the current Lenovo was having a reasonable keyboard from which to interact with Calibre. This seems to work less well than imagined because touching the screen to scroll tends to select something in Calibre and the absence of a mouse with scroll wheel, etc. makes pointing and scrolling less easy. CC sounds like one would do a minimum of update, so the keyboard would be less important. Is the interface one which is easy to traverse with touch screen? She went with a 10" device to have more screen area for Calibre and the keyboard, but an 8" device would probably be nicer for reading ... as long as CC could still be easily used at that size with several hundred books.

I use calibre companion in a smartphone (5") and a tablet (7"), and I don't have any problem to use it. I use the group characteristic a lot, and it's quite easy. I don't have a lot of books (around 400 hundred), but there's no problem at all.

Device connection: Behaves like a cable in that you control from Calibre (on device column appears). You can add/delete/send again (update). Content server Mode: You browse Calibre and choose which books to pull. The main difference from usin a simple browser is that the book and metadata is integrated with CC's off-line mode. This mode allows CC Read status to be returned and update the DB (No other device can do this) CC has 1 off-line mode: This accesses the books and metadata CC retrieved while online without an active connection. This also allows you to mark books read (will transfer back to Calibre the next time CC connects in DEVICE (w/metadata sync mode) |

Just to update, the Lenovo Windows tablet has been replaced by a Samsung 8" Android tablet and we have successfully connected wirelessly and downloaded an initial set of books into CC. Looks like a winner, though undoubtedly some questions remain! Thanks for your help!

Further questions should be posed in the CC forum, which clearly TdeV figured out as she has already posted one there. |
