Again - this can develop later in life and few are born with the enzyme deficiency. The ability to make lactase (which digests lactose) resides in the very tips of the villi in the small intestine. This is the first part damaged and lost in celiac disease (the part that digests fructose goes next), which is one reason for the "ibs" symptoms present in many with CD (eating anything with lactose and often fructose causes bloating and gas, as not-so-good bacteria digest the sugars farther along in the digestive tract). I've seen ads (touting some cure or lactase supplement) that says that "all" or "most" adults lose these tips as they age (and talks about a minority of the world population that doesn't have the issue). Not so oddly enough, that population is from an area which traditionally, not just recently, consumed wheat as the major grain ... and the early morbidity and low fertility of an undiagnosed person with CD means that the same areas have a lower rate of CD (those with the genes didn't pass them on as well). You have to wonder if all those people popping lactase supplements aren't just undiagnosed CD cases (and depending on the lab used, there can be high rates of false negatives, while false positives are pretty much non-existent).

Oh, and "ps" .... I've had IBS all my life. Awful not knowing exactly what it is from, but when I get a bout, the pain is insane! Also, I had undiagnosed migraines for years.
I feel for you ... mine all went away (banished with the wheat).

Actually, it's not a matter of "making" lactase, it is the absence of the enzyme betagalactosidase, which is often genetic. Especially in small children. I know, I was one of them. Betaglactosidase deficiency in children often causes "failure to thrive" problems in newborns.

Although people who do have damaged villi due to other causes can develop the inability to break down lactose later in life, it does not make it an "allergy." That's a whole different systemic problem.

What is it with the managers of delivery services? "Yes, we'll be there between 9am and 12midday". Then they tell the drivers to do a 400 mile round trip as well as deliver ten items during the 3 hour slot..... I can imagine the dialog: "Well our metrics say you took, on average 27 minutes between deliveries last year, so factoring in our 10% improvement target and a traffic reduction caused by the recession you should be able to deliver each item in 18 minutes. So you can easily manage this load. Oh, and if you drive a little faster, you could also do all the deliveries over in Germany whilst your out this morning.."

So there I was stuck at home and the eventually turned up (very good pair that did an excellent job of getting the item into our house) at about 6:30pm and they still had (I'd recon) about 2 hours of work to do...

And right on cue, just as they opened the lorry, the heavens parted and proceeded to pound our property in a way that would have made Poseidon proud...

I'm going to have to have serious words with Laws' drinking partner next time I'm in Adrian's bar.

Thanks for all the info on CD, everyone.

I've just learned that my brother is suing his ex for custody of the kids. I have mixed feelings about this. I think it's probably going to come out the best for the kids, but it's going to be very stressful for the whole family (including me).

What is with the people at that Michael Jackson funeral?!?! A person is dead what type of psycho wants to go to a random persons funeral. Lets take a second and pretend it was not Michael Jackson but just some guy on the street that died, would anyone care? People have just become so sick in this reality tv phase of society.

People don't think anything is real its just "O I can't wait to tell my children I was at Michael Jackson's funeral" I wish my parents would tell me they were at John Lennon's funeral, I would have them locked up immediately. Put them on the short bus and send them to a padded room bunch of crazies.

What I would have liked to see instead of that crap that they put on television, I'm so glad that I dont have cable so I don't have to watch that garbage, is put all of those idiots in the staples center and fly that whole thing straight to the moon. Get them the h3ll out of here, good riddance would be all I had to say.

At some point people will wake up from this daze of living through other people's lives and realize what a sh*t hole their life has become and maybe we'll get some progress again. Until then there's just more talk about a Second stimulus bill that the US will need because the first one didn't work out too well, *Insert clip of Christian Bales "Ohhh Good For You!!"*. I guess we are all just supposed to pretend that the Jesus Juice incidents didn't happen because some good music was made, Puleez. He shouldn't even be allowed in this country

It just makes me sick to see that people have become so subhuman to go around to people's funerals that they don't even know. I'm sure Fox is already working on a reality show to broadcast funerals next, maybe we can get some cameras in the coffin for sweeps week. I'm through with this topic now, the human race has made me sad

Stupid Word spell checker!

So I'm proof reading a text version of a PDF source. Loads of errors, and I'm hoping Word's spell checker might be of some help.

It has a look at 'opim'ons' and wonders to itself what it could possibly be.

A three year old could tell it that the most likely word is 'opinions'.

Word's one and only suggestion - 'pompons' !!

So much for my big idea of switching on AutoCorrect and sitting back while it does all the work.

Not to make light of your angst and I DO agree with you, but consider the alternative. At least with SpellChecker finds the errors for you and tries to make a correction. I can't tell you how many papers I turned in in college (typed on a typewriter, no less) where the instructor circled spelling errors and took points off the total grade. Thank goodness I majored in Computer Science and had very few papers to write.

ARHHHHH!!!!!!! I hate my own disorganisation (I know it's my own fault). Just spent all evening editing a short story to realise 5 minutes ago I am editing an old version.

I need to get a grip cause right now I couldn't arrange a drunken debauch in a distillery.

aw ! poor pev. i hate it when i do something like that.

and now for something completely different :

AAAARRRRG !!! (okay that bit is pretty much just the same)

good news : yay ! the new biography of Tom Waits IS AVAILABLE AS AN EBOOK !!! hallelujah !!!

bad news : it's priced at 29.95$ list !!!!! for an ebook !!! arg !!!! it's 21.64$ at fictionwise (club price !!!), 20.31$ at bob (after rewards !!), 14£ at Waterstone's (reduced from 20£ !!!!) !

for the kindle it's $16.47 which is obviously of no interest to me since i can't buy it from the kindle store. i did find it on ereader at 12.95$ which is 56.76% reduction from the list price, but i've never tried the ereader format, have not heard good things about it, have no idea how to remove the drm / format shift...

seriously, this is ridiculous. do you hear me random house ? RIDICULOUS !!!!!!

i've been waiting for this biography for months (seriously : patricia sent me a link to an article reviewing it before it was published) and i really want to read it, but i don't want to read it enough to spend over 20$ on it !!!

i guess i'll have to wait for the next killer sale at fw.

yep, must be july. a firecracker the size of a mortar shell (from the sound of it) or possibly an obus just exploded apparently immediately next door to my bedroom (again, from the sound of it). sheesh. i hate those things. what sadist came up with the idea of making something whose sole purpose is to make as much noise as possible, without even any pretty lights or anything to justify it ?? and (possibly worse) what idiot decided to sell them all through the month next to the penny candy in every damned bakery in the country ????? whoever it was, i'd like to have a Word or two.

little cat not happy either. not at all.
