During my final walk of the evening I heard a suburban symphony. My neighborhood is very quiet and secluded, but geographically very close to I-40 -- the main drag to get anywhere in central NC. You can hear the heavy rush hour traffic as background white noise morning & night. And the sirens when there are accidents - you get used to it.
As I neared home, there was first the fire truck siren - first responders (the fire house is 5 blocks from my house) heading out towards I-40. This was followed by ambulance and police sirens - probably a pile up at an exit ramp. Then I heard a top note to all these sirens -- had to stand still and listen hard - and realized that it was our resident Canada geese pairs flying overhead from Jordan Lake to the small neighborhood lake where they shelter at night. The geese calls seamlessly blended into the multiple sirens. |

I just got a job offer and I accepted. It's at a local supermarket at the cash register. It isn't my dream job, but for now it will do. The hours are good; weekdays morning and afternoon maybe the occasional evening or weekend. It's only a 10 minute bike ride, if the weather is horrible I can take public transport or, if push comes to shove, I can walk.
It's a relief to have found something, meanwhile I'll keep an eye on job openings for the stores at the top of my list (hobby stores and book stores). |

It'll help the finances for a while, and also keep you from going stir-crazy at home. And you can bring home the odd grocery item you need for an un-planned meal, even if you don't do your whole shop there. Congrats! But I hope you find your dream job too.

Today is a laundry day, three loads (cleaning cloths, my own laundry and my sister's bedding). I hope everything is done in time for us to go to the Christmas event nearby. There's a Christmas market, a lantern parade, you can take a boat tour and there's a Dickens themed area. Hopefully there will also be food trucks/stalls so we don't have to make dinner when we get back. |

Today is my first day of vacation (I'm off until January) and I'm using it to update my book spreadsheet, pick my books for the Mobileread TBR challenge on storygraph and generally get some things in order on my portable hard drive.

Took an after dinner walk in the dark - with a lovely fine drizzle. It was fun to view the Xmas lights/decorations glittering in the rainy mist. My raincoat is one of my most valued clothing item - I love to walk in the rain.

I'm preparing for Christmas this morning. I have to wrap my sister's gifts, finish up my parents' gift by adding some things to the wedding album we made and taking care of some chores so we don't have to do those later this week. After the groceries get delivered and put away around noon I can relax with a cup of tea. Not sure whether I'll game or cross stitch first.

I just ordered myself a little Christmas present. I finally found a (second hand) copy of Steven Tyler's solo album, a country album. I'll have to wait two weeks for it to be delivered, but I'm so curious how it sounds.
I've lost a lot of my Aerosmith cd's during the move, I thought they were in a box with other cd's but the weren't. I had initially decided not to replace them; I have them digitally and those that have been released on vinyl I also have. But I think I'll be making a list of the missing ones and slowly try to get them. I found a good website which has a lot of second hand cd's in good condition so I can keep an eye for any missing ones on there. |

It's nice that after only working my new job for five days that you get complimented by one of the managers of doing a good job and that things run very smoothly when you work.
Because of last week's snowmageddon I'm experiencing my first regular week. Not looking forward to today, since on Wednesday the new offers/week sales start and it's really busy. Usually I start on my own on the self-checkout "square" in the morning. Today I'm only alone for the first hour. And I'm glad I have Thursday off. |

Just waiting the second-hand purchase from the december's plus worked monies hours heats up, thinking "is it the all in one solution" to all the house things, quite hopeful about.
Well it's the "Polti Vaporetto Eco Pro 3000", now sold as "Polti 3.0", as the design is the same, but as some reviews explains the connections aren't identical and the newest models haven't the nozzle (I guess I can wash the car too, within that accesory). Edit: I do have to say it doesn't do magic as solo, but it gets quite nearly. A very nice tool. Last edited by nana77; 01-15-2026 at 05:37 AM. |

Yesterday there was a big explosion (probably a gas explosion) and a fire near where I used to live. Several buildings have collapsed and a lot of buildings in the area are damaged. There were four people hurt, though not badly and although there aren't any people reported missing they're still searching. The people living in the house weren't home at the time of the explosion.
A family friend lives around the corner, but an hour after the explosion he was still home, so hopefully he wasn't evacuated since he has trouble walking. A childhood friend of my sister grew up in that street and her sister and family still live there. The family is fine and there isn't any visible damage to their home. A lot of businesses in the area were regular customers in our store, so we know the owners/employees. I hope everyone is alright, though I know several businesses are severely damaged. It brings back memories from the fire we had in 2013. |

Our family friend is okay, he didn't have to evacuate, though his street is still closed for traffic. The friend's sister's house was seemingly okay shortly after the explosion, though the street is still closed off and from what I understand even people whose homes are not damaged can't return because they don't have gas, water or electricity. My father's barber also escaped relatively unscathed, the front window is broken and it's very dusty inside, but that's it (the barber lives over his shop). The comic book store is also fine and the cinema with café was able to open on Friday afternoon. The flower shop is badly damaged and has started a Go Fund Me to stay afloat until they can open again. They haven't found the cause yet, but everybody assumes a gas leak. There were still old gas pipes in the ground (which would have to be replaced before 2028 in that street). It's the type of gas pipe that doesn't handle ground movement well and can rupture (several explosions have happened because of that since the 1990s). The latest news was that there were still two cats missing. |

Just got done digging the wiper blades out of their icy/snowy encasement - before they freeze in place - realized that I haven't had to do this in years
