Norton has really had a problem with fleas this winter. We've used Frontline, sprays, and flea shampoos, but the bugs still find him. Recently my wife had a brainstorm. She wondered if electric lice killing combs would work on fleas. I'd never heard of them, but off we went to the drugstore to buy a Robi Comb, and guess what? It works! Plus, there's the added pleasure of the thrill of the hunt! There are probably similar products out there, but that's what we used.

It was funny watching my wife at the checkout counter of the drugstore. She explained why we were buying an electric lice comb because she didn't want the clerk to think we had lice.

Sometimes it stuns more than zaps them dead, but a stunned flea is easily converted into a dead one. One jumped off Norton a couple of days ago as soon as the comb touched him and I had to chase the little bugger all around the bed to do him in. The comb is powered by one AA battery. I'd like to figure out how to hook it to the car battery, but then again, that might not be such a good idea.

Monday is Valentine's Day.

Here in Japan, this means the women give the men chocolates and cakes. I like the Japanese version of Valentine's Day!

It's also our wedding anniversary!

Garlic, like onions, in sufficient quantities can be dangerous to dogs (and cats), though the dosage I believe is quite significant. It is important to find out what the right dosage is (it generally depends on the dog's weight, for instance) before going nuts with the stuff, but a lot of people on a dog mailing list I help administer find it quite efficacious; swear by it. Googling the words "dogs" and "garlic" together will help you with this with immediate helpful links on the first page of results.

I'd note that in some areas (generally heading towards and in the tropics) some people have indicated garlic has been less effective, and use the commercial treatments. Nohmi, in Australia you might also wish to research how effective it is against paralysis ticks, should they be prevalent in your area. As you know, a paralysis tick and its symptoms not quickly noticed can kill a dog very quickly at worst, or lead to an uncomfortable and expensive night at the vet for your pet (and a longish recovery).
