The Case of the Sulky Girl is the second in Erle Stanley Gardner's Perry Mason series. It has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK.

Quote:
Perry Mason now a major new TV series

'Tantalising on every page and brilliant' Scott Turow, bestselling author of Presumed Innocent

Frances Celane has good reason to pout. Thanks to a provision in her late father's will administered by her uncle, she's caught in the middle of a family feud between matrimony and money. If she chooses marriage, she loses a million. But beautiful young Frances has a strong will of her own she's not afraid to use. One way or another, she means to hear wedding bells and cash registers making beautiful music together. Her first move: hire Perry Mason to orchestrate things.

Unfortunately, stubbornness runs in Frances Celane's family, as Mason discovers when he confronts her Uncle Edward. After Perry's powers of persuasion fail to penetrate Norton's hard head, someone decides the only way of cashing in is by bashing in the uncooperative uncle's skull. But when the blood spills, so do the secrets. Then it's Mason's turn to brood, as he tries to figure out if a girl as pretty as his client could have a hand in something so ugly ...

I read that just two weeks ago! I'm guessing that Gardner created the courtroom scene. Am I wrong?

I am putting this up only because it is part of a popular series. It is not written by Tom Clancy.

It's also free at Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-road-to-ithaca

And Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Road-Ithaca...dp/B083CWFSSH/

Normally I ignore books that aren't the first in a series if I don't have them that go on sale and I haven't read any of them yet, but since this is free, I picked it up. I guess I have to wait to see if the first one ever goes on sale, or maybe see if it's available at the library. It does sound interesting, though!

I think you may be right!

I'm having trouble thinking of any earlier series that focused on a courtroom denouement the way the Perry Mason titles do. There may be some, but off-hand, I can't think of any of the classic British era series that do. Obviously not Sherlock Holmes. And not the classic noir like Hammett or Chandler. Rumpole didn't start until the 1970s, and Perry Mason titles started in the 1930s. Maybe if you wanted to reach a bit, the original Judge Dee stories, which were written in Chinese a long time ago, although not translated (and added to) by Robert van Gulik until the 1950s.

I've read the whole series and love it - not as dark as Jo Nesbo, a good dose of black humor, but not for everyone by any means...

That's a good description. The main policeman has a couple of rather eccentric assistants in his basement office.

Although they go on sale all the time in the US, it's rare to see Open Road titles at £1.99 in the UK. But here's the first in the really fun IMO Arly Hanks/Maggody series by Joan Hess at that price.

This is one series I can not get into because of the name of the author. She has the same name as the that horrible woman.

No Stone Unturned is the 11th in Julie Moffett's Lexi Carmichael series. It has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

I've just started reading this series again - I had read a couple of the earliest books, and then sort of lost track of the series. I picked up several of the middle-ish titles with Harlequin points, though, right before Harlequin went to their weird proprietary download app, and have finally started reading and enjoying them. So I'm happy to see this one, which appears to be the next-to-last in the series at the moment, on sale.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GBB28LZ
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/search?qu...Stone+Unturned

Spoiler:
Quote:
Geek girl Lexi Carmichael thought getting engaged would mean calmer days ahead. But when Slash's past brings up more questions than answers, she's not going to let anything--or anyone--drive them apart.

Getting engaged is supposed to be a fun, exciting time in a girl's life. But things are never that easy for Slash and me. Instead, someone is threatening to expose Slash's past--a past so secret, even I know very little about it.

Before I can get used the weight of Nonna's antique ring on my finger, he's on his way to Rome...and we're farther apart than we've ever been. Still, I have no intention of sitting at home and letting him take on the Vatican by himself.

With a little expert-level hacking, I learn Slash is keeping secrets from me. Big ones. Dangerous ones. In fact, the more I dig into Slash's past, the more I discover things about him I never knew--things that eventually pit us against each other.

From Rome to the Amalfi coast to the highest levels of the Vatican, we both race to discover the truth. No matter what I find, we're officially a team now, so I won't let him face this alone. Even if I don't know if our relationship can survive it.
