Fall of Angels is the first in the Inspector Redfyre series by Barbara Cleverly, who is maybe better known for her Joe Sandilands series. I've enjoed several titles in that series, and also in Cleverly's Leatitia Talbot series. In any case, Angels has dropped to £1.61 at Kindle UK.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B074YMRH4K

Spoiler:
Quote:
Barbara Cleverly, bestselling author of the Joe Sandilands series, introduces an ingenious new sleuth who navigates 1920s Cambridge, a European intellectual capital on the cusp of dramatic change.

England 1923: Detective Inspector John Redfyre is a godsend to the Cambridge CID. The ancient university city is at war with itself: town versus gown, male versus female, press versus the police force and everyone versus the undergraduates. Redfyre, young, handsome and capable, is a survivor of the Great War. Born and raised among the city’s colleges, he has access to the educated élite who run these institutions, a society previously deemed impenetrable by local law enforcement.

When Redfyre’s Aunt Hetty hands him a front-row ticket to the year’s St. Barnabas College Christmas concert, he is looking forward to a right merrie yuletide noyse from a trumpet soloist, accompanied by the organ. He is intrigued to find that the trumpet player is—scandalously—a young woman. And Juno Proudfoot is a beautiful and talented one at that. Such choice of a performer is unacceptable in conservative academic circles.

Redfyre finds himself anxious throughout a performance in which Juno charms and captivates her audience, and his unease proves well founded when she tumbles headlong down a staircase after curtainfall. He finds evidence that someone carefully planned her death. Has her showing provoked a dangerous, vengeful woman-hater to take action?

When more Cambridge women are murdered, Redfyre realizes that some of his dearest friends and his family may become targets, and—equally alarmingly—that the killer might be within his own close circle.

The First Rumpole Omnibus by John Mortimer is just £0.99 at Amazon UK.

This comprises the first three books about Rumpole, 'Rumpole of the Bailey', 'The Trials of Rumpole' and 'Rumpole's Return'.

Highly recommended.

I like this series too. Odd (but nice) to have a later title in a series go free...

It's also free at Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-road-to-ithaca

And Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Road-Ithaca...dp/B083CWFSSH/

Kindle UK is having a "first-in-series" sale through June 30. There are a lot of the usual Amazon-published titles (some of which can be quite good, but go on sale a lot), but I noticed a few interesting ones from my taste. I'll give the whole link below - there are only three pages of crime/mystery titles, so not too hard to look through.

Among the ones I noticed:
  • The Crossing Places, Ruth Galloway series, by Elly Griffiths
  • Heresy, Giordano Bruno series, by SJ Parris
  • Extraordinary People, Enzo files series, by Peter May
  • Jar City, Reykjavik Murder series, by Arnaldur Indridason
  • A is for Alibi, Kinsey Millhone series, by Sue Grafton
  • The Bethlehem Murders, Omar Yussef series, by Matt Rees - I really really liked this short four book series

I noticed a lot of titles that weren't first in series, but I was looking in the morning and sometimes the links are a bit screwed up to begin with.

I suspect it’s a promotion for the release of another title at the beginning of next month. Sigh. I know more of the books have been written and in English, because the Italian translations are available. I wish they’d get them out faster.

Death in a Desert Land by Andrew Wilson is currently £0.99 at Amazon UK.

This is the third in his series of mysteries with Agatha Christie as the hero. I very much enjoyed the first two.

Quote:
Detective Carl Mørck and his colleagues Assad and Rose must use all of their resources to uncover the horrifying truth in this heart-pounding Nordic thriller from the #1 international bestselling author Jussi Adler-Olsen.

Carl Mørck holds in his hands a bottle that contains old and decayed message, written in blood. It is a cry for help from two young brothers, tied and bound in a boathouse by the sea. Could it be real? Who are these boys, and why weren't they reported missing? Could they possibly still be alive?

Another omnibus of titles in a series by Terri Blackstock is part of the US Kindle Daily Deal today, matched at Kobo US. The Sun Coast Chronicles contains all four titles in that series, and has dropped to $2.99, which is only $0.75 per book if you need them all.

Sorry, the two previous collections are back up to normal prices...which at $7.49 and $7.99 are still not too bad if you need all of the books in the omnibus.

Spoiler:
Quote:
New York Times bestselling author Terri Blackstock’s Sun Coast Chronicles series—now available in one volume!

Evidence of Mercy

Lynda Barrett, a young lawyer, hates to sell her plane, but she can no longer afford to keep it. Enter Jake Stevens: wealthy, arrogant, and interested in buying Lynda’s beloved Piper. Together he and Lynda embark on a test flight that ends in disaster—hurling them into a terrifying sequence of events. One thing becomes clear: Someone is out to get Lynda . . . someone who will not be satisfied until she is dead.

Justifiable Means

A violent criminal with a knack for evading justice. A beautiful victim with a secret to hide. Between them stands one good cop, torn between justice and the law. This rape case is an exception: The victim is more than willing to testify. And there’s abundant evidence to put the suspect behind bars. Just one thing bothers Detective Larry Millsaps. Young and beautiful Melissa Nelson seems to know almost too much about the evidence needed to convict her attacker. The unfolding investigation unearths a brutal track record on the part of the suspect . . . and a stunning revelation of Melissa’s own haunting past that could do far worse than destroy her credibility.

Ulterior Motives

Louis Dubose, international art dealer, has been murdered. The police are certain they’ve got their man. Recently fired by Dubose, Ben Robinson has a motive backed by a convincing trail of evidence. Except that one person isn’t convinced—someone who knows Ben well. Knows that he’s quite capable of trashing human lives but not of taking them. Now that person is about to gamble her own well-being on his innocence . . . when her personal indictment against him may be almost as bitter as murder. The question is: Does Sharon Robinson know Ben as well as she thinks she does?

Presumption of Guilt

Just one person can save the children from a terrifying future. But to do so, she must master her past.

Beth Wright, a newspaper reporter, is hot on the trail of a story that could expose something very ugly at the St. Clair Children’s Home. Someone else is hot on Beth Wright’s trail—someone who wants to make sure her story never sees the press. Between them stands Nick Hutchins, a social worker who finds his own gut hunches about the children’s home increasingly confirmed, first by Beth’s investigation . . . then by a high-speed attempt on her life . . . and finally, by an intruder’s startling confession.

I remember from a while back that there are some folks on this thread who like the John Jordan series by Michael Lister. The 20th title in the series, And the Sea Became Blood, is free right now at Kindle US and UK.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07L5XDG5W

Can he survive long enough to catch a killer?

The murder of retired priest Andrew Irwin begins like any other homicide investigation for sheriff’s Investigator John Jordan. But it is soon interrupted by an existential superstorm of apocalyptic proportions that threatens to destroy both John and his family.

Can John catch a killer under such extreme and extraordinary circumstances? Will he live long enough to even be able to try?

The stakes have never been higher, survival never more in question. Don’t miss this thrilling stand-alone mystery adventure if your heart can take it.
