The menagerie filled into the Mayor's private office--an office that screamed (something my migrane could do without) your tax dollars used to his personal benefit--and settled down, but just before the Major could speak, I pre-emptively interrupted.

"I want to speak to the organ grinder, not the monkey," I said, realising that that was a very, very, very bad idiom to use at that point on so many different levels, not least since it could very well turn out not to be an idiom after all (and my organs had had quiet enough grinding already for one day, thank you very much).

The Mayor's right eyebrow climbed into what would have been his hairline, if he hadn't been completely bald. Then he began to chuckle, one of the most hideous sounds I hope never to hear again.

Daffy's idea of education clearly came form the school of hard knocks, I concluded after my lesson as I massaged my chin.

mmmmm, I thought, as I rubbed my chin and thought, gladly, that the 3 day old beard had helped soften the blows; "that was not playing fair", I mused to the poor representative of the anatidae family (no way was I getting thoaqued for something else!).

Just then, up jumped a natterjack toad, leaving a pool of dank squalid putrid gunk on the carpet, the remnants of which were pooled and draped onto my lap; he (or she - being PC here) held in their paw (hand, foot, appendage) a key .....

This might have been due to Ugarte's fortunately timed interruption.

"I am sure we can resolve the current, ummm, situation without resorting to further unfortunate unpleasantnesses since we have a common interest in a certain set of photographs for which a mutually benefical exchange can be arranged," said Ugarte the one-eared cat despite the razor-sharp stares from the Mayor.

I rolled with the punch from Daffy and hit the deck as if I was out cold and lay there motionless as he searched my pockets for the photographs, which to my amazement he didn't find as they were no longer there, and as he didn't find the toad (for reasons beyond me).
