Thanks for the input for the input from those with a 700. Fry's has the 505 and the 700 side by side so I had immediately dismissed the 700 as an option because it looked almost hazy to me. If the 600 has the 505's clarity, I think that will be the one!

the 600 probably has a lower contrast, because a touchscreen almost always absorbs some bits of light.
Also there's no other way than that a touchscreen reflects some of the light. The PRS-505's screen has an excellent anti reflection layer! The images appear sharp, while there's very little reflection. I expect the 600 to be between the 505 and the 700, reflection and transparency of the touchscreen wise. |

I would keep the 505 since the 300 is going to have a smaller screen and the same processor as the 505. Also I think the ergonomics of the 505 are quite nice. And since you already have the 505, it won't cost anything to give it to your husband. Well, it will cost a 600. But no more.

So why should you not have the same benefits as your married friends? You deserve to upgrade under the guise of giving your old reader to your husband as well, whether you have one or not! I got the 700 and justified it because my boyfriend was using my 505 when I wanted to use it. All I need is one visitor to be checking out my 700 while my boyfriend is using my 505 to justify needing the 600. Eh... it doesn't take much.

When I was deciding which reader device to purchase, it came down to Kindle or Sony eReader. The wireless connectivity was important to me, but I really liked it that when you do tether, no proprietary software is required, so you can connect to any computer, anytime (plus Sony still hasn't released their mac software AFAIK). You can purchase books with any web browser and have them delivered wirelessly or download to whatever computer you happen to be using at the time. I really HATE it when a portable device requires proprietary software in order to function and get content on it. A web browser should be sufficient. Wish iPods were like that... Still I am kind of looking for another reader, because Kindle does not have support for Cyrillic (Russian), ePub and PDF (well DX has some crappy PDF support but looks like Sony's support is better), and I think it is going to be awhile before Amazon releases a device with these features - they see ePub and PDF as undermining the Kindle Store offerings I suspect, rather than simply a feature people expect to find in any ebook reader. It would be nice if that could be had for $200 or less, but I'm not sure the PRS-300 is the device I'm looking for. |

Sony did release the Mac version of their Library several weeks ago.
Also there is no need to use proprietary software to transfer books to the Sony Readers. They show up as drives in Explorer, so you can drag and drop books straight to them. |

The point is I can't buy anything from the Sony store without the software (correct?). |

Yes, you do need the Sony software to buy from the Sony store. But you don't need the software to put books on the device; you can buy books from other venues and transfer them to the device without the Sony proprietary software.
