It has been reported that uneven (i.e. splotchy) lighting can be caused by a misaligned white paper "reflector" over the LEDs, which may be repaired by opening your kindle and adjusting it for better alignment:

At that link, the user reported that adjusting the paper moved the uneven lighting effects. However, he did not say that he attempted to remove such effects for totally even light distribution from all the LEDs. I extrapolated that possibility from his reported results. It may take some practice to get it right (especially if amazon is having difficulty with this issue).

The takeaway is that we may have identified the (or a) cause of this problem, the first step in finding a cure (and perhaps amazon does not even know what causes it yet).
