A Woman of the Iron People by Eleanor Arnason is the Open Road Science Fiction Daily Deal $1.99 in the US.
I haven't read this but it won the James Tiptree, Jr. Award and seems to have several positive reviews. Has anyone read anything by this author?

https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/eb...-iron-people-1

From award-winning author Eleanor Arnason comes a well-drawn first-contact novel about a team of anthropologists exploring Star Sigma Draconis, an alien world where human interaction may have unexpected impact on the culture of the Iron People who call it their home.
Lixia and the members of her human crew are determined not to disturb the life on the planet circling the Star Sigma Draconis which they have begun exploring. But the factions on the mother ship hovering above the planet may create an unintended chaos for both the life on the planet and the humans exploring it. As the anger increases on the ship, the ground crew becomes more and more affected by the conflict and begins to rely on their instincts to keep the project moving forward. Unexpected danger plagues the mission as Lixia is determined to expand her knowledge.

I read a novella of Arnason's in one of last year's issues of Lightspeed Magazine and was very impressed. Enough so that I was planning to make it one of my Hugo nominations, only to find out that it was a reprint that had already been some sort of previous award finalist.

Anyway, I ended up intending to look up more of her stuff, and if I hadn't already gotten A Woman of the Iron People from Fictionwise back before Open Road acquired the old e-Reads catalogue, I'd likely be buying this now, FWIW.

Arnason is very good, anthropological and character-driven SF in the manner of Le Guin. I have a print copy of A Woman of the Iron People, but I'm grabbing the e-book as well.

If you still buy from B&N (which I do), all the old E-Reads catalogue from Fictionwise have been replaced by new ISBNs from Open Road, and B&N will happily let you buy them again. I accidentally did that the other day, but B&N refunded my money.

Thanks.

Bought this through B&N before ages ago and stripped for my Calibre, but I'm always willing to tip the author a buck or two for a Kindle version lately. Makes up for his other books I just...um...borrowed (Library or otherwise).

I think I'm going to avoid this edition. I have a Baen edition with Heinlein's original ending and the modified ending. While I will admit that RAH had the right to write the story as he wanted, I first read the story when it was serialized in 1962-63. At the age I was then -- PoM was supposed to be a juvenile -- dealing with the death of a major character was not something I would have handled well. After all, to quote Oscar Wilde, “The good ended happily, and the bad unhappily. That is what Fiction means.

I first read Podkayne from the library in an edition that had both endings. I didn't care for the book overall, but the original ending was much, much better. Heinlein's original ending was just so freaking depressing.
