Audible's having another 3-for-2 sale. There's roughly 200 books and it ends March 17. Per usual, I suspect that people who aren't eligible won't be able to see it.

I'd call this one of the worst sale lists ever--I can't find even one book that's marginally interesting, to add to the ones already carried over in my cart from the last 3-for-2 sale. Blech.

When I could see the lists in Audible's sales, I've never found any books I was interested in.

A better sale would be to let us choose the books we want from Audible's entire catalog.

Better for who, exactly? For Audible this is a win-win - they get to talk about their great sales, but still only have to give you one book for one credit since few want the items on "sale."

Frequently, I find most of these books in the sales have better Whispersync deals anyway.

Well, in other Audible sales I have found some books I'm interested in, and ever since I learned that an item left in the sales cart will carry over to the next such sale, I've picked up some of the books. And in other sales there have been books I've already bought that I know are good. This time, though, there's pretty much nothing. At least nothing to my taste.

Additionally, for those who can't see it, Audible didn't break up the list by genre this time; it's alphabetical by author. I prefer the genre listings, even though they occasionally seem to miscategorize.

How to Bake Pi: An Edible Exploration of the Mathematics of Mathematics

What is math? And how exactly does it work? In How to Bake Pi, math professor Eugenia Cheng provides an accessible introduction to the logic of mathematics - sprinkled throughout with recipes for everything from crispy duck to cornbread - that illustrates to the general listener the beauty of math. Rather than dwell on the math of our high school classes, with formulas to memorize and confusing symbols to decipher, Cheng takes us into a world of abstract mathematics, showing us how math can be so much more than we ever thought possible.

Cheng is an expert on category theory, a cutting-edge subject that is all about figuring out how math works, a kind of mathematics of mathematics. In How to Bake Pi, Cheng starts with the basic question "What is math?" to explain concepts like abstraction, generalization, and idealization. By going back to the logical foundation of the math we all know (and may or may not love), she shows that math is actually designed to make difficult things easier. From there, she introduces us to category theory, explaining how it works to organize and simplify the whole discipline of mathematics. The result is a book that combines some of the most satisfying features of popular math books - the thrill of truly understanding things that may or may not have been confounding in high school - while still looking long and hard into unexplored territory.

Through lively writing and easy-to-follow explanations, How to Bake Pi takes even the most hardened math-phobeon a journey to the cutting edge of mathematical research.

$4.99 -- Desert God -- Wilbur Smith / Mike Grady (15.2 hrs) --> 4.2 stars

Quote:
Fiction > Action & Adventure > Historical

New York Times best-selling author Wilbur Smith - hailed by Stephen King as the "best historical novelist" and one of the world’s biggest-selling authors - returns to Ancient Egypt in this breathtaking epic that conjures the magic, mystery, romance, and bloody intrigue of a fascinating lost world.

Game of Thrones meets Ancient Egypt in this magnificent, action-packed epic. On the gleaming banks of the Nile, the brilliant Taita - slave and advisor to the Pharaoh - finds himself at the center of a vortex of passion, intrigue, and danger. His quest to destroy the Hyksos army and form an alliance with Crete takes him on an epic journey up the Nile, through Arabia and the magical city of Babylon, and across the open seas. With the future of Egypt itself on his shoulders, Taita enters a world where the line between loyalty and betrayal shifts like the desert sands, evil enemies await in the shadows, and death lingers on the edges of darkness.

$3.95 -- Friend and Foe: When to... -- A Galinsky, M Schweitzer / T Perkins (9.0 hrs) --> 4.2 stars

Quote:
Business > Leadership

Friend and Foe: When to Cooperate, When to Compete, and How to Succeed at Both

In Friend and Foe, researchers Galinsky and Schweitzer explain why this debate misses the mark. Rather than being hardwired to compete or cooperate, humans have evolved to do both. It is only by learning how to strike the right balance between these two forces that we can improve our long-term relationships and get more of what we want.

Galinsky and Schweitzer draw on original, cutting-edge research across the social sciences to show how to maximize success in work and in life by deftly navigating between cooperation and competition. They offer insights into topics ranging from how to get and keep power, how to recognize deception and build trust, how to turn our weaknesses into strengths, and when to begin a negotiation to get the best outcome - while ensuring that our counterparts walk away wanting to negotiate with us down the road.

And along the way, they pose and offer surprising answers to a number of perplexing puzzles: When too much talent undermines a team's or company's success; when acting less competently helps you gain status; why many gender differences in the workplace may simply be power differences in disguise; why ending an auction at 2:00 a.m. can get you the best outcome; how our best intentions can ironically make us appear racist; and why husbands gain weight during pregnancy. We perform at our very best when cooperation and competition are held in the right balance. This audiobook is a guide for better navigating our social world by learning when to cooperate as a friend and when to compete as a foe - and how to be better at both.

Quote:

Dianetics: The Evolution of a Science

Dianetics: The Evolution of a Science is L. Ron Hubbard's own story revealing how he arrived at his discovery of the Reactive Mind that underlies and enslaves Man.

Written to coincide with the release of Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health, Evolution of a Science was originally published as a book-length feature in a national magazine. The issue sold out within days, triggering thousands of letters and creating a storm of interest that grew into a worldwide phenomenon.

That's why Evolution of a Science is the story of the greatest adventure of all - the exploration that discovered the Reactive Mind and the technology to conquer it. He wrote it so you would know.
