My Fire Stick has shipped. Original expected date was 12/24, but it should be here on Thursday. It'll be used on a secondary tv for prime and netflix, so I don't expect any issues.

Get one with two or three HDMI outlets. Also avoid the ones where the HDMI slots point towards the floor, and unless it's going to be wall mounted. Otherwise, it is a pain to access the outlets. Make sure the outlets are going to be accessible where ever it is you are going to put the TV. Get one with 1080p output, rather than just 720p. Get at least 32".

I wouldn't spend money on a "smart TV" that's just more stuff to break.

You should get a nice 42" or bigger plasma TV with great reviews for picture quality. Add a decent sound bar for under the TV and a blu-ray player (I love the Sony BDP-S5100/S5200 players). If you do not have a really comfy recliner, get one of those too -- and a soft warm blanket. Pick up a couple of amazing blu-ray disks...

Turn the TV on, start your movie, dim the house lights, and enjoy a movie.

I would grab one of the acclaimed Samsung sets before they leave the plasma market.

Go as big as your budget allows.
If possible, get rear backlighting on the LCD, preferably with zone dimming, over edge lit.
(One reason why Vizio e-series is popular.)
Don't sweat the LCD refresh rate past 120Hz so long as it is true 120, unless you're really, really into sports and eagle eyed.
3D buys you very little.
Don't pay extra for 4K.
Don't sweat the SmartTV features. If it has a good set, fine. If not, you can get better of a stick, STB, or gaming console. Many BD players, too.
Go as big as you think you want and then two more sizes.

Get one with at least 3 HDMI ports. I have 3 and keep unplugging something
Also, mine has a USB port which comes in handy for devices that power over USB (Chromecast for instance)

I don't even use Blu-Ray. It's DVDs for me.


Can anyone recommend a cheap good HDMI switch or splitter? I need one for my DVD player and Roku. I plan to leave the Fire Stick connected to the TV through that adapter cord it came with.

If you find that the DVDs look off, you could look into buying a Blu-Ray player that also "up-converts" DVDs. It's supposed to make them look more like the Blu-Ray output.
