Here is your poblem in the kpg.conf, just change the last 5 to 0 for even margins, create the patch file again and reapply.

An apology to the conspiracy theorists

Up to a short while back, I considered most of the comments about Kobo trying to block hackers from modifying their code as paranoia and/or conspiracy theory.

After all, zlib does offer a saving in space so that might be an excuse for the earlier changes. Now that Kobo has gone to using XOR to obfuscate the code, some of those conspiracy theories are beginning to sound rather likely. The only use for XOR is to hide information though not very well.

David

Unfortunately, "keep 'em out" seems to be the current vogue with the big companies. Sony eventually closed down the PRST2 and I'm not aware any hacking at all has been possible with the PRST3. The new Kindle PW2 hasn't been jailbroken yet (unless you're handy with a soldering iron!) ... and now Kobo seem to be at it.

I wonder why they all think this will sell more devices and make their existing customers happier? As far as I can see it's likely to do the exact opposite or drive people to give up on eink in favour of small tablets.

Has anyone tried the 09 patch on the new aura (not HD)? Does it work?

Are you sure you want to apply the `Margins fine tuning` patch at all? I think the only use for this patch is to correct a device that has an off-centre screen. If your screen is OK then just disable it.

Some of the patches are only useful to people with specific requirements, unless you are certain that you need a partcular patch you should disable it before running kpg.exe. For example the `Wifi insomnia` patch will not be useful for most people, it will just drain your battery.

The 09 patch is for firmware 3.0.0, but this firmware version is not available for the new Aura yet, only for the Touch/Glo/AuraHD.

I don't know whether to be impressed that Metazoa cracked it so quickly, or not surprised at all, as XOR is a notoriously poor choice for obfuscation/encryption. Anyway I did not think of XOR, so hats off to Metazoa.

If Kobo really want to stop this hacking, then perhaps they should make the firmware more configurable, and thus remove the need for the patcher. If they don't want to do that, then for heaven's sake leave the door open for us to patch it.

I tested it on one Aura and it worked. Please, make sure to use the right firmware version.

On my Aura HD, I disabled that patch, on my wife's Aura, I set the left to 0 and left the top at 10 -- she was complaining the text started too close to the top of the screen.

Actually, the 09 patch come with configuration files and copies of libnickel.so.1.0.0 for 2.61, 2.8.1 (original not B), 2.10.0 and 3.0.0 firmwares.

metazoa has also mentioned that he hasn't forgotten the request to ignore the CSS styles but doesn't know when he'll be able to get to it.

If anyone is using the line spacing patch, does it work for you on the 2.10.0/3.0.0 firmware? For me as soon as I touch the slider it reverts back to Kobo default values. I ended up going back to 2.8.1 because of that.

I'm using a patched 3.0.0 on a Kobo Glo, and the line spacing slider is working as expected. No surprises here.

I just checked with an Aura HD with FW 3.0.0 and the line height went from 0.9 to 1.35 when I moved the slider (checking the value stored in KoboeReader.conf after making changes). I didn't see any changes in the ebook since I set all the line heights from the stylesheet.

So if you move the slider all the way to the right you don't get the ~3 lines worth of spacing?

Thanks, does that change correspond to a single notch on the slider or did you move it all the way?
