Forget my last post... I've rewritten my file and the problem has disappeared ! perhaps I've got a bad and hide caracter (a non-ASCII character) in my old file that disabled the settings.

Nightmode on H20
I've been wanting to upgrade to a H20 but I always use nightmode on my Glo these days (just think it looks better and is less straining on the eyes at night).
Anyway, my question is, since there is no hardware light button, could I still use nightmode? At first glance i'd have said no, but I was thinking that since I don't really need to be able to switch back and forth then maybe simply changing the config file to set it active by default could work. Then again I don't know if it will work at all without the button. I'd appreciate any help on this issue as I was looking forward to the new model but don't want to upgrade until I know that nightmode will work. It should be easy to test if you have yourself a H20 ![]() |

The missing button wouldn't be a problem, you could switch by editing the config file or using one of Launcher apps to toggle. But I don't own a H2O either so I can't give any promises.
I just glanced over the kernel sources and it looks like hardware accelerated inversion is still a unfixed todo, but the original workaround for the Aura should still work. @philie: That won't help since it is a installer. All you have to do is copy the KoboRoot.tgz file into your .kobo folder and disconnect from your PC, and it should reboot and and install. Note that you have to press the light button for ~1sec to activate. If you can't get it to work, please describe exactly what steps you have done. Last edited by yoq; 10-25-2014 at 01:08 PM. |

@yoq
Thanks for your reply, I'll probably get a H2O and try it out in the next few days (fingers crossed). I'll post back whether it works or not (if I remember / not too busy playing with a new gadget). Still, I hope the modder comes up with a nice clean way of switching for those rare times when I do want to read in the normal mode. PS: Could you explain to me about the hardware accelerated inversion and it's workaround please. |

How to setup Night mode under original system without light button,
such as kobo mini and aura h2o. How to get a simple way as same as physical button to turn on/off under mini system? If use other way by app, i have made KBmenu and KOreader, and KOreader has night mode. Because use other way, it cost many battery life. Especially under KOreader app system. all right, i wait for some guys give me advises. thanks. |

Works on H2O
So that's the good news, it works. Bad news is that it has mad ghosting even after a full screen refresh (on my Glo it's barely noticeable even by the 6th page turn). You can see it with the light as low as 10%.
Does anyone know how to fix this? |

Hi Gottis,
I've got a Glo too with FW 3.11.0 and Nightmode build13 (no other add-on) and I have no problem with gosthing. Are you sure you've got FW 3.11.0 and Nightmode build13 ? NB : I use a resistor (see https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...=200706&page=7) to reduce brightness (thank again to Yoq for this solution !) ; so my 10% setting is not the same than yours. @akorx
Thanks for your reply but the ghosting is on my new H2O. My old Glo is basically perfect even in night mode (even on really high brightness). Looks like i'll just have to make do with it black on white. Not a major issue really but I would have definitely preferred to use night mode. Hopefully a fix will come out within a month or two. |

All newer devices (starting with the Aura) are using the next generation of eInk panels. When they changed their code to work with these, they started using the 'graphics card' for post-processing to make page-turning smoother. And they never bothered to reimplement the inversion-mode for their new devices because they weren't using it anyway. So on these models, the inverting is done on the CPU and this is uses a bit more battery. It's not much, 5-10% maybe. ____ The ghosting problem: Ghosting is inherent in eInk technology, because fast updates are based on correctly 'guessing' the current physical state of each pixel/cell, and then changing only as little as necessary. Over the last generations of eInk panels, screen updates have improved, but (presumably) at the cost of extensive factory calibration. From my understanding, this calibration is tuned for either black-on-white or the other way around. It might be possible for nightmode to switch back to one of the older update-algorithms, but I need to do some testing first. Does the H2O do full-screen refreshes, as the Glo did? Could you post a picture or even better a short video of the ghosting problem? |

Example of Ghosting on H2O night mode
Thanks for getting back to me, your explanation was very clear.
The H2O does seem to do full refreshes at the same interval as the Glo (changeable between 1 and 6 pages). That said, there is still ghosting directly after a full refresh on the H2O, so I don't know what that means. I've taken some pictures of the ghosting along with a few comparison images from my Glo. The colour tone is different but newer model better contrast etc. Most of the images are taken at about 20% brightness but the ghosting is just as visible on the H2O down to around 5% when it becomes difficult to read in total darkness. Both AFTER full refresh As you can see, the H2O (left) has ghosting even after the full refresh when the screen flashes, while the Glo has none at all. [Image violates Posting Guidelins for size - MODERATOR] H2O AFTER full refresh Close up on post refresh ghosting [Image violates Posting Guidelins for size - MODERATOR] H20 BEFORE full refresh (5 page turns) Close up on pre refresh ghosting, MAJOR ghosting [Image violates Posting Guidelins for size - MODERATOR] Glo BEFORE full refresh (4 page turns - usual brightness) This is what I normally use on the Glo, as you can see even after 4 page turns you can't really see any ghosting at all. [Image violates Posting Guidelins for size - MODERATOR] Glo BEFORE full refresh (4 page turns - MAX brightness) Even on MAX brightness the Glo has barely any ghosting before the page refresh.
