Prior to the iPad, tablets were more expensive. At $500, it was actually reasonably priced (compared to what was available at the time). I believe for the first iPad, Apple has had to accept lower profit margins (I believe the estimate was 25%) in favor of gaining market share. That gambit has paid off beautifully.

How long they can keep convincing people to pay $400~500 for an entry-level or last year's iPad model while other tablets are quickly dropping down in price, we don't know. I do think other manufacturers aren't making as much profit from their tablets despite matching the iPad in price. Main reason being economies of scale.

Who says content is restricted? Forgot your coffee this morning, bright eyes? Just kidding, no offense. I want extra space on the device, not in the cloud, and not with a bunch of extra cables or boxes. SD cards disappear nicely into the unit, like they are an integral part. And they can be swapped when I go on trips.

I can do the same exact thing. No extra cables. Just a little SD card reader. The argument was that it can't be used on an iPad. So that argument is no longer valid. Whether you you like a little box or not is beside the fact.

I'll add that I carry a messenger bag, so this little card reader sits discreetly in the bag (in a pocket or such).

I'm actually going on a cruise this week coming week & taking several SD cards with movies for the kids, who can stream simultaneously between the kindle fire & the iPad.

I just don't think you like the fact that I can do it.

I did have my coffee, keurig, donut shop. Oh wait, am I going to get some lecture about their propriety little cups.

Since you are offering free tech support...

Our company has to deal with computers that are semi locked down: no internet access, and they do not want to install iTunes (USB devices are fine). We need to be to email zip files to/from an iPad/iPhone, and get those zip files on/from the computers. How can I do that (without jailbraking the iPad/iPhone)?

I'm not an Apple hater, just rather new/ignorant to the iPhone/iPad.

Thanks.

P.S. And sorry for sidetracking the thread.

How can you email files without Internet access?

I use the iPad as a consumer device.

Point being, we are all hurt by Apple's decision not to include an expansion slot. Slow or fast, that still would have been great to have. I am not criticizing Apple for charging $100 more for 16 GB, it is taking away these options that is the problem.

Well, perhaps like the stylus, now hopefully the others will start undoing those "customer unfriendly" design decisions.
Not hurt me in the least, I use an Android tablet... not hurt most (if not all) iPad users - they don't care. I have had discussions with iPad users and mentioned I needed SD card slot and got comments like - Why, What for, Does everything I want and similar... people on this site are too prone to project their personal needs onto others as though their needs are the only important ones and forgetting the most important factor - if Apple wasn't meeting the needs of many people then they wouldn't sell the things... and if it doesn't suit your needs - GET SOMETHING ELSE, I did... it's called choice...

It's the computers that are locked down, not the iPads/iPhones.

The iPhones/iPads have internet access through 3G.

Exactly. May not work for you, that's fine, plenty of other gorgeous tablets out there.

So the question is: How to transfer zip files between a computer and an iPhone/iPad via USB without using iTunes, any other third-party software on the PC, or jail-breaking the iPhones.

I'm pretty sure that the answer is that you can't.

However, if you were wiling to jailbreak the iPhone, there does seem to be some software that will allow file transfer over bluetooth. It's called Celeste.

If the computers are wifi enabled, you can set up an adhoc network (no internet access) and transfer the files to/from idevices with a webdav sever app on the idevice (like Files Pro from http://www.olivetoast.com/ ). No wifi, you may be out of luck.

At work, my desktop has no wifi, but my old elcheapo laptop does. So eveything is transfered to my laptop, virus scanned (company rules) then transfered where ever else. This would be the same process for me whether using ios, android or even a USB drive (again, company rules).
