My job, my colleagues' jobs, and my tutors' jobs will be lost. And a lot of students will no longer be able to get the sourses they want.
If you think that it is short-sighted to close off educational opprtunities during a recession, then I agree with you.

Sorry to hear about this. Why is it they always hit the humanities so hard in these cases? Never ceases to amaze me. You'd thnk that education was unimportant the way it gets treated sometimes in this country.

Hope it works out Patricia, and if there's anything I can do, sign a petition, whatever, please let me know.

Since this massacre is directly linked with funding, could you manage to find and face the source withholders and negociate an increase?

If it is governmental funding, then the goverment is directly responsible for this cut via the law it composed and must be subjected publicly to criticism. Governments are spending recklessly to counter recession, surely a law like that one is counterproductive. Or is this spending reserved for incompetent banker benefit...

Especially since lifelong learning is one of the current responsibilities of the Welsh Assembly.

Quote from the Welsh Assembly website:

"Lifelong learning creates better opportunities, empowers communities and helps to provide the jobs and skills that people need. Lifelong learning will help to bring a bright and sustainable future to the people of Wales."

http://wales.gov.uk/topics/educationandskills/?lang=en

Lifelong Learning is one of the Scottish Parliament's current initiatives as well, but there just isn't enough money going around to fund projects. Organisations are having to rely much more heavily on volunteers to do jobs that paid staff used to do.

Currently writing a story about Emily Dickinson, inspired by a Frank Black song and seeing some children playing this morning on their way to school. In best Hannibal from the A-Team voice "I love it when a story comes together."

We have already started lobbying Welsh Assembly Government Ministers, including Jane Hutt, the minister responsible for education, Lifelong Learning and Training, plus a number of Assembly Members.
After two days of the campaign we were the lead story today on Radio Wales news, the lead story in the South Wales Echo and covered elsewhere too.
My email is jammed with people expressing support, so I've started a list with regular bulletins and will probably migrate it to a blog or website sometime next week.
As soon as the union manages to get the figures from the university, we've lined up a team to go through them with a fine-toothed comb, then devise an alternative plan.
There's a public meeting on Monday, too. We're going to get some of our tutors to set up a Facebook site, twitter, and the online petition should be enabled by Monday. Our students are already asking what they can do to help, and have been wonderful.

Good work. I think this kind of "grassroots" mobilization can be very effective for situations like this.

Let's see... email list, blog, facebook, twitter, online petition... You could create a YouTube video with some great teaching moments and short interviews with some of the people whose jobs are at risk, and the students who will be cut off. If any of your students have enough talent in that direction to make a really funny video, it could take off and get a lot of attention for your cause. I'm not sure MeetUp would be relevant for you, though it might help to try using it to organize rallies around your area. Your blog will have an RSS feed, I presume...

We could make tshirts, buttons/badges, bumper stickers, etc. through the Ministry shop at cost if that would help get the word out.... "Oh! The Humanities!"
