I was referring to your knowing that the quote came from the Twilight series.

"What if it was dinnertime?" asked [name]. "Wouldn't your want to be called then?"

"Of course," said the cat. "But a simple cry of 'Dinner!' would do nicely. See? No need for names."

OK, some more

Quote:
Miss Forcible insisted on reading [name]'s tea leaves.

"Well, looks like everything's mostly shipshape and Bristol fashion, lovey," said Miss Forcible.

"Sorry?" said [name].

"Everything is coming up roses," said Miss Forcible. "Well, almost everything. I'm not sure what that is." She pointed to a clump of tea leaves sticking to the side of the cup.

Miss Spink tutted and reached for the cup. "Honestly, Miriam. Give it over here. Let me see..."

She blinked through her thick spectacles. "Oh dear. No, I have no idea what that signifies. It looks almost like a hand."
I thought someone would get this straight away. It's a 2002 novel which was made into a 2009 movie.

And if that doesn't help, here's one of the puffs from the back of the jacket.

^Got it! It's on my want to read list. The movie is quite entertaining.

Yes, that's it! Which bit gave it away for you?

Hopefully Dathi will have a quote for us shortly, now that my filler has been guessed.

As soon as I read the name Forcible I thought Pratchett for some reason and having just read Good Omens I was led to Coraline by Gaiman. It was kind of like six degrees of Kevin Bacon at that point.

I never even read the first clue you posted, but it was pretty obvious to me with the 'other' description.

I love the scene from the movie where they are reading the tea leaves.

Ok, here is one that shouldn't be too hard.

"And then Kino's brain cleared from its red concentration and he knew the sound--the keening, moaning, rising hysterical cry from the little cave in the side of the stone mountain, the cry of death."

I was looking for another clue that wouldn't give it away, while at the same time giving a good hint. I'm afraid I failed, so here's a clue that should just give it away--

You're right, the pearls give it away. I'm pretty sure I read this long ago, but like Home In My Shoes, I didn't remember the name Kino.

The Pearl by Steinbeck.

Here's a new quote:

"It was a lovely walk, that, nearly four miles over the downs. We thumbed over a variety of topics strung lightly on the common thread of apiculture. He gestured wildly atop a knoll when comparing the management of hives with Machiavellian theories of government, and cows ran snorting away. He paused in the middle of a stream to illustrate his theory juxtaposing the swarming of hives and the economic roots of war, using examples of the German invasion of France, and the visceral patriotism of the English."

I haven't read it (yet), but I suspect that this must be The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie R King
