I thought someone would get this straight away. It's a 2002 novel which was made into a 2009 movie.

As soon as I read the name Forcible I thought Pratchett for some reason and having just read Good Omens I was led to Coraline by Gaiman. It was kind of like six degrees of Kevin Bacon at that point.

I never even read the first clue you posted, but it was pretty obvious to me with the 'other' description.

I love the scene from the movie where they are reading the tea leaves.

I was looking for another clue that wouldn't give it away, while at the same time giving a good hint. I'm afraid I failed, so here's a clue that should just give it away--

"But the pearls were accidents, and the finding of one was luck, a little pat on the back by God or the gods both."

You're right, the pearls give it away. I'm pretty sure I read this long ago, but like Home In My Shoes, I didn't remember the name Kino.

I haven't read it (yet), but I suspect that this must be The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie R King
