Oh, well, I liked Earthsea, but that doesn't mean anyone else has to like it.
![]() I have mixed feelings about the Amber books. I like them well enough that I played a character in a very involved Amber RPG some years ago (using Amber Diceless), but sometimes I felt like Zelazny was just sort of stringing them along. Oddly enough, I like the early Merlin books better than either the Corwin books or the later Merlin books. ![]() I haven't read anything published by Kate Elliot under that name. I did really enjoy The Labyrinth Gate, which she published as Alis Rasmussen, and it was only last year that I found out they were the same person. Since then, Kate Elliot's books have been generally on my "to read" list, but... well... this is embarrassing to admit, but I wonder if I'd enjoy them, based on the cover illustrations. I kind of need to be able to like at least one of the main characters, usually, to enjoy the story. I'm currently re-reading early Katherine Kurtz-- and kind of wondering what I saw in it when I was younger. People who actually like Le Guin might also like Tanith Lee, I think. |

I couldn't gell with any of the characters in Kate Elliot's books, King's Dragon and Prince of Dogs, so much so I gave them away and haven't been tempted by any more of hers'.
Tad Williams's Memory, Sorrow & Thorn trilogy is a good read; but some of the other works I didn't find as good. Worthy of mention : Juliet E. McKenna : Tales of Einarinn - 4 books. Julian Jay Savarin : Lemmus - A Time Trilogy William Horwood : Duncton Wood - a Tolkein-like adventure staring moles..... |

i am just reading The Ghost Brigade by John Scalzi and it is just OK. I am not convinced the plot is coherrent or that the philosophical points are convincing. But I can always take up these problems with him at Armadillocon in Austin Texas in August

I read "Terre de Lierre" it's a translation and I have no idea of the original title. But it is more bloody than I wish my stories to be. And if you look at her titles they have a gory ring to most of them. This is actually why I'm not quite into fantasy. Of course there are jewels like "The Golden Compass" but that too is filled with killings. I don't care that a bad guy died, it bothers me as much as a good guy. Call me a softie.
