Si, senor. Pendejos, pendejas, pendejadas and... at least in NM, pendejados, such as (clicky) the ART (Albuquerque Rapid Transit) project.

That's cool, Bilbo1967!

One other person at university wants to be in the group--the President of Student Veterans of UNM. She's very smart. She doesn't know her IQ score, but she has a semi-photographic memory. She strikes me as a very intelligent person. *nods* There are many people in the Lower Working Class/Poor and Lower Middle Class socio-economic stratums who could've been in MENSA. But they were never given the tools necessary to succeed scholastically. They often don't have the cultural capital (i.e., knowledge of middle class norms and folkways) and/or practical intelligence (i.e., social skills, common sense, good judgement) needed to succeed in academia or the scientific community. We, as human beings, are creatures of habit and creatures of our environments after all. Environment and habits shape us--shape our minds, hearts and bodies to a large degree. Location, location, location. Location, access to gatekeepers and habits are... almost everything. |

My 1978 MCAT put me in the top 16% percentile of the population that took the test (The MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test) was already a highly skewed bell curve to start with. More than enough for MENSA, if I had bothered. After the Bakke decision, I became a computer programmer. I refused to "grovel for grants". (And I studied the stock market, which I still do today. There is always a way out, with enough smarts and dedication.) Just an old blonde-hair, blue-eyed, pachucho. . . |

Well we had it tough. We used to have to get up out of the shoebox at twelve o'clock at night, and LICK the road clean with our tongues. We had half a handful of freezing cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at the mill for fourpence every six years, and when we got home, our Dad would slice us in two with a bread knife.
But you try and tell the young people today that... and they won't believe ya'. |

I'm preparing for a busy day. We first have to drop the car off at the garage and pick up a loaner car. Then we go to a supplier nearby the garage. It's a really old fashioned supplier; you're allowed to walk through the aisles in their warehouse and pick out what you need yourself. Hopefully by the time we're done the car's ready for pick up. After that my father will drop me off at the craft store whilst he visits one of our suppliers next door, followed by a visit to yet another supplier. And finally we're going to the supermarket for a couple of things.
Meanwhile I have to restrain myself from pre-ordering the new Paperwhite; I just saw I can do that from the German Amazon website. My Voyage is still working fine, except for a couple of pinpricks of light. Plus Kindles are somewhat notorious for have problems when they first come out. So I'm going to try and wait for the reviews to come in and see if it's worth the upgrade. It might be a good Christmas gift for my mother; she's always complaining about dirt between the bezel and screen. |

I don't know about anyone else but I could use an update on what Luna and Maru have been up to.

Maru, who's now playing with my curtains, seems to sense when I start waking up in the morning. Each morning she comes into my room and walks over my chest, purring loudly until we have properly cuddled. This morning I acted as if I was asleep too long and she jumped on me from half way up the stairs next to my bed. Luna is still the bold one, trying out new things first and after her dinner she wants to have access to my lap for a while. They're now also allowed in my parents bedroom at night and they do behave well, mostly. Most of the night they sleep on their bed. |
