I do have an account, it is just that smile does not function for non US users. As said you devault to the main page, losing the link to the book offered.

One minor nit: I have an Amazon.com account. I can't buy ebooks though I can buy the same title as a pbook.

If someone uses the direct Amazon link, I get a

Kindle titles are available for CA customers on Amazon.ca.
Continue shopping on the Kindle Store at Amazon.ca.

Which I can click on that and see the book on Amazon.ca if it's available. If someone uses a smile.amazon.com link, I get bounced to Amazon.com's home page. Time to manually switch to Amazon.ca and then search for the book. A PITA.

And oddly, about 90% of the time, the book is available for me to purchase on Amazon.ca.

Without a note saying who the so called "charitable organization"* is i will copy the link then edit out the smile part.

You pick the charity you want Amazon to donate to. When I click on a smile.amazon link even from someone else, the charitable donation goes to my local high school's drama program. It does not go to a charity chosen by the poster of the link. If you're in the US, I'd encourage you to go to smile.amazon.com and choose a charity. It doesn't cost you anything.

I sympathize if for whatever reason the link doesn't work for you. I'm planning to continue to use it when I share a link, but certainly won't be offended if other people choose not to. Either way, people may have to modify the links to meet their needs.

Correct. Mine goes to "Flying Fur Animal Rescue" which is one man who either flies if the weather is good or drives a converted bus if it isn't to North Carolina. There he picks up dogs (mostly) and cats from high kill shelters and transports them into the New York/New England/Pennsylvania area to shelters and rescues that need pets due to spay/neuter programs that work too well. And all of that is on his own dime or from the donations of people like me.
