What's with this talk about El Dorado? Are you referring to the 1960's Howard Hawks movie...or is there some other more up-to-date El Dorado I'm unaware of?

Despite marking myself as a techie and improving my kingdom through advancement in tech, I have ended up matching Harry Dresden???

For whatever reason, the couple of times it was mentioned stuck in my mind.

-From "Storm Front"
I looked down at my black canvas duster, with its heavy mantling and waterproof lining and sleeves actually long enough for my arms. “What’s wrong with this one?”
“It belongs on the set of El Dorado.”

-From "Grave Peril"
My own black jeans and dark Western shirt were a ton and a half more stylish than Michael’s costume. “What’s wrong with it?”
“It belongs on the set of El Dorado,” Michael said. “Are you ready?”

-From "Restoration of Faith"
“It belongs on the set of El Dorado,” she snapped. “Who are you supposed to be, Ichabod Crane or the Marlboro Man?”

I snorted. “I’m a wizard.”

Hmmmm...your quotations brought it back to me that when I read those passages I asked myself the exact same question. The reason for that question is/was that the era of that movie seems to be kind of out-of-the-range of Jim's usual pop-culture references.

I never thought of that, but I guess it is out of synch with Butcher's usual 80's & 90's sci fi references.
Maybe it's just a real westerny title that evokes westerny images. Plus it's fun to say. C'mon, say it with me:
"El Doradooooooooo"
(I added a whip crack afterwards for effect.)

Perhaps Jim has a secret love of westerns. He certainly has put Harry in a lot of "show down" situations.

I'd find this movie to be a much-more-in-character reference (a 1985 Lawrence Kasden boxoffice flop) and the costuming works!

Gaily bedight,
A gallant knight,
In sunshine and in shadow,
Had journeyed long,
Singing a song,
In search of Eldorado.

But he grew old—
This knight so bold—
And o’er his heart a shadow—
Fell as he found
No spot of ground
That looked like Eldorado.

And, as his strength
Failed him at length,
He met a pilgrim shadow—
‘Shadow,’ said he,
‘Where can it be—
This land of Eldorado?’

‘Over the Mountains
Of the Moon,
Down the Valley of the Shadow,
Ride, boldly ride,’
The shade replied,—
‘If you seek for Eldorado!’

Edgar Allen Poe 1849

When is the next book coming out? Reread Skin Game couple times now, started over on Storm Front, now in Fool Moon. Jim Butcher needs to start typing faster ...

Ah thank you Alan, good to be back. Peace Talks, huh? Now we are going to 2 5-letter words? Interesting title - gives nothing away. Skin Game at least fooled us into giving something away, and then didn't and maybe did in the end. I hope we will be seeing new characters introduced in Skin Game again - if Harry can afford it that is.
