I think the real problem is that nobody ever read 'War and Peace' unless they were forced to do so by an oppressive school system that also made us read 'Jane Eyre' and Shakespeare's works when we were 10 years too young to appreciate them! At age 12, children should be sent to work in the mines and on factory assembly lines until they are 21. THEN let them go back to school. There will be no disciplinary problems, students will be happy to study (hey, it beats standing at a punch press or a hard rock drill 10 hours a day) and they can actually enjoy reading 'Great Expectation!.'

Gene Shoemaker become the first person to have 'this' done. What was it that gives him this credit?

Shoemaker. Hmmm... Shoemaker-Levy, isn't that the comet that crashed into Jupiter a few years back? I'd say have a comet named after him, but Halley already had that honor, and I'm probably thinking of the wrong Shoemaker anyway.

I seem to recall somebody's ashes being taken up in to space and, presumably, released up there somehow.

Well-travelled - Pioneer (10 or 11) space probe? Though it's bigger than 6x9, so is it the plaque it bears?

I actually remember the launch of Pioneer 10, and seeing the plaque in the news (nudity! Shock, horror!) An early memory, I hasten to add.

Just before I sign off for the evening, three acerbic definitions from Dr Johnson. To what was he referring in each case?

"The triumph of hope over experience"
"The last refuge of a scoundrel"
"A wretch who supports with insolence, and is paid with flattery"
